Welcome to Penn Class of 2015!

Hey Penn15ers that got accepted to Penn, congratulations! I just thought I'd create this thread for people to discuss being accepted and the next steps of deciding whether to attend in the fall and being prepared to begin college.

I'm currently a freshman in SEAS, so I can answer engineering-related question as well as admissions and overall questions regarding Penn if you have them. Once again, it's an extraordinary accomplishment for you to have been accepted and I look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Hi! Thanks for doing this
Just wondering, how do Penn students feel about being so closely integrated into the city and living in such an urban area? Obviously it must be convenient, but does it ever get distracting, etc.?
Also, how would you judge the overall “vibe” of the student body? What is the level of competition there for a humanities major?

Again, many thanks for taking the time to do this.

How are the research opportunities for freshmen engineering students?

I’m also very interested in taking business classes while studying engineering. Since I didn’t apply to Wharton, how much of a disadvantage am I in compared to Wharton students?

Funny thing is that if you stay in campus all the time sometimes you forget that you’re living in an urban area.

Throw in thousands of smartypants into one place, and see what happens. Cutthroat competition, blood spilling everywhere, limbs flying all over the place.

Ok, I’m kidding. But TBH, just about everyone here is competitive. Some people express it outwards more than others, but most people keep it in themselves. Competition definitely exists, but it certainly can stay invisible.

If you are really anxious to be involved, it won’t be too difficult to get involved. It all depends on you.

Thanks for your response :)

I’m also wondering if it’s worth it to go to the Penn Preview Days… I’ve visited the campus before on a tour last summer, and I’m 90% sure I’ll be matriculating at Penn, so is it really a worthwhile experience to fly there all the way from Vancouver, Canada?

Since I didn’t find out about Penn until uhhh…today, I already planned a trip to visit UChicago over my spring break. Now that I’m admitted, the only way I could work in a quick stop to Penn without forgoing expensive plane tickets was to spend basically the weekend at Penn, which means I get to see the campus and city at least, but I don’t get to sit in on classes or actually be there for a student preview day. So I guess the big things – how is the faculty in your (and anyone else’s) experience? I’m a CAS student so if there are any other CAS grads/current students I’d love for you to put in your two cents as well! How big are classes normally? What is housing like – do many people stay in dorms all 4 years? How easy is it to work with the financial aid office? Feel free to answer however many questions you feel you are able to answer well…and thank you soo much! :)

The faculty is excellent. My professors are incredibly accomplished and passionate about their field and are very helpful and willing to answer questions outside of class. As to your question about housing, while you have to live on campus as a freshman, housing is NOT guaranteed for upperclassman. There is only enough space to house 60% of the student body, so many upperclassmen live off campus, which can actually be cheaper than say living in the high rises I hear.

um I just have questions about what BFS is…
Is it good if you get into a program related to that?

Also: I got invited to join the University Scholars program. Is it really a worthwhile to join? Do Penn Scholars have much of a presence on campus/get better opportunities?

No.

No.

NO, NO.
All these programs are going to do for you is suck you dry till there’s nothing left. You’ll exhaust yourself till you can’t even crawl to class and you will stay in your room crying and questioning everything around you while everything around you seems to fall apart and get sucked into an endless pit.

On a completely random note, happy April Fool’s! (If you don’t see what I’m doing you should get examined)

If you are interested in doing research, definitely join UScholars, they can help you get funding.
