Will I fit in at Penn? What are people like? Help! I need to decide by Saturday!

Hi all! Thank you so much in advance for answering my questions! I was accepted to Penn and I visited on one of the Penn Preview days. I really loved it! I’m just worried about one thing and this is fitting in. I’m from rural Maine and it seemed as though there were a lot of kids in my groups from Westchester Country, Connecticut, etc, etc. I sat in on a lecture and I’m pretty sure every girl in the class was dressed up. Is money/what you wear/where you live a big thing a Penn? I’m not poor or anything, so spending time and money in the city won’t be a problem, but I haven’t been on extravagant vacations, etc. Do people who come from different backgrounds/do you think I will fit in just fine?

Hey, smiley1633!

I think you’ll absolutely fit in at Penn. One of the things that originally drew me to the school was the friendliness of my tour guide the first time I visited. She was wearing khaki shorts and a white t-shirt if I remember correctly, and was from the MidWest (not sure if she was from a rural area or not). Nonetheless, she was extremely enthusiastic about Penn and her friends there!

The nice thing about having 9,600+ undergrads is that almost every type of person is represented in the student body. While I’m sure that there is a fair number of kids at Penn who come from affluent backgrounds, I haven’t found that the wealth stereotype fits anyone I’ve met in my multiple trips to the school to visit friends, tour, etc. I will say that students in sweats are few and far between, but designer labels don’t dominate, either.

PM me if you’d like to talk, and best of luck with your decision! I hope you’ll also be a Quaker '15er :)

Remember that more than 45% of Penn undergraduates receive financial aid.

The Penn undergraduate student body is extremely diverse, and getting more diverse every year.

And what Penn really needs is more kids from Maine. ;)

Hey smiley, I was having a bit of the same dilemma as you: as in, feeling I wouldn’t be able to fit in and the such. I’m pretty poor so I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in without name brand clothing and the such. But I met a lot of people at penn that seemed pretty chill, all in normal tee shirts and jeans.

With so many kids at Penn, there has to be a couple like us, right? So I wouldn’t be too concerned  I’d love for you to PM me if you want to talk more, I can definitely sympathize with your doubts and perhaps help? If worse comes to worse, we could always start our own little club of normal people who don’t bathe in 20 dollar bills lol

Well, I enrolled in Penn last week, and I am definitely not all that fashion-conscious or affluent! I mean, I know how to dress myself in the morning, but I don’t pay attention to trends or labels, and my family certainly isn’t rolling in money. And like others have said, there are enough students at Penn that finding others like us shouldn’t be a huge problem. Even at the Penn Preview Day I went to, there was a pretty good mix of students besides the stereotypical rich Northeasterners (and I’m from Jersey, LOL.) I think you’ll be just fine! :)
