Welcome to the GT, Class of '13

Cindy have you gotten a decision yet?

Cindy - here’s my questions…

-which college ?
-how did you determine where to go for the year ?
-did you ever consider staying at that college and not transfering ?
-which classes did you choose to take this year ?

thanks

Hi Cindy. My questions are about AP classes. My D got 4 fives and 2 fours on here AP’s so far and is taking 5 more. How does this work when you transfer? It seems as though she will not be able to skip ahead and will have to take the basic bio/chem. etc. classes in order to meet the transfer requirements. Does this mean she will essentially lose out on getting credit for her APs?

Grant - I still haven’t heard from them yet. Disheartening since everyone on the fbook group seems to be hearing, but I figure it’s just because I sent in one of my transcripts kind of late haha. I’m planning on giving Ian a call sometime this week to see if they have all my stuff now/have a decision yet.

Enjoy - I got into CALS as an Animal Science major. For the inbetween year I ended up going to my second choice school, Virginia Tech. I chose it because they gave me honors and a few scholarships, as well as it was instate and its got the vet school for my state. I won’t lie, I absolutely LOVE it here and now that I’ve established myself with my friends and gotten used to the classes and I’m working at the breeding center and everything, it’s going to make me really sad to leave. However, in the long run I know that Cornell will be better for me academically, and I love the campus there and I figure that I’ll make new friends and get comfortable there as well. My parents are also really supportive of me going to Cornell which made it easier for me as well. As for classes this year, my required courses were two semesters of english, bio 1 & 2 with lab, chem 1 &2 with lab, and statistics. I also took a bunch of other random animal science related classes that I needed for a diploma here at Tech, and hopefully the majority will be accepted for credit at Cornell. Supposedly they’ll give us a list of what they’ll be accepting once they send us our official acceptance in the next few weeks.

SVM - I’m actually not entirely sure how the AP and IB credits work since I ended up scrapping all of mine as I only got 5’s on all my IB HL exams and cornell only accepts 6’s or 7’s. It is likely she will lose out on some if not all credit though - I lost out on a ton of mine since Virginia Tech gave a TON of credit and I had to deny most of it, and the rest just wont transfer over. On the plus side though, if your D is a science major, it might be better if she takes the basic bio/chem courses, as it’ll make her foundation stronger and will hopefully help her out later on.

Hey guys, question…when you are “applying” as a transfer (you have GT), do you have to right essays and include letters of rec and all of the extras that we needed when applying for our freshman year? Or is the application process simplified for GTs?

Thanks

Nope it’s much simpler for GT’s. All you have to do is provide a high school transcript, a fall transcript, and fill out a short packet that includes getting a mid year grade from each of your spring semester teachers (to show you’re still making the required grades) and includes getting a form signed by your advisor/dean stating you haven’t run into any disciplinary problems. And some more financial aid stuff, but I believe that was it. It didn’t take me very long to fill out at all :)

hi cindy,
are there any high school requirements to fulfill in order to ensure the GT offer? i didn’t see anything regarding h.s. grades in my GT letter, but now that you mention having to send a high school transcript, it got me wondering. thanks in advance :P

Hi, everyone. I have a question on the required courses for CALS bio major. Of the several requirements, I know that 2 semester-long, 8 credit hours of general bio 1 & 2 with labs are required; however, if the local school only offers one semester, 5 credit hours of general bio with labs, would additional advanced bio classes satisfy the bio requriement?

Is there anyone familiar with the CAS GT ? The requirements are so open, what classes would one recommend a student take the first year ? Thanks

I would recommend taking the generic intro courses at your school so that once you get to cornell you can take advantage of all the wonderful upper level electives and such :)

I would suggest courses such as your freshman english classes, intro sociology, psychology, philosophy, history, economics. I would take a look at the CAS graduation requirements and try to build your schedule based on that.

hi all, im bumping this thread because i have a question similar to pvstudent regarding hs grades; do people with GT option have to send the Final Report from Commonapp upon completing high school?

yeah you just send in your final hs transcript

Since receiving the form to fill out by May 1 for the transfer option I have not received any further correspondence from the College of Human Ecology or Cornell. Is that normal? Anyone out there receive a packet to fill out or anything at all?
