Hi–my son got a move in date of Tuesday 8/28 at 7pm. Does anyone know exactly what time welcome week starts on Wednesday the 29th? We would love to have breakfast with him or at least see him in the morning before we return to Chicago. I think it might be a late night with a move-in time so late in the evening. I looked at the welcome week page and it says Check in for Welcome Week will take place on Tuesday, August 28 between 11:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, August 29 between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Does that mean activities for students only do not start until after 2:30pm on Wednesday? Would it make more sense to check in on Tuesday? Any suggestions or answers would be greatly apprecitated! Thanks!
Great question – I would love to know the same. We are coming in from Milwaukee. Daughter has an afternoon move-in time on the 28th.
With the volume of people descending on the UMN campus at that time, the earlier you get checked in the better. Consider leaving a day earlier and breaking the trip so that you arrive right at 11 am on the 28th. That way, you can explore the campus or the area and have a special lunch or dinner together before Move-In. It’s possible (though your individual schedules will confirm) that they begin Welcome Week with brunch with their group in the dining hall on Wed. morning (that’s when the meal plan starts). If they aren’t yet meeting as a group, then it’s possible to join them and you wouldn’t be the only parents doing so. By planning for an early arrival, you cover the bases and get to spend that quality time before they eagerly say “so long” and head off with their new friends
They can check in for welcome week with their roommate/neighbors. It’s a fun thing to do. I would recommend dropping him off, help get his things organized a little bit and then say your goodbyes. Let him have this time to make new friends and figure out his next day with his new roommates or neighbors. Even though you might be staying over, he won’t likely want to be with you, sorry.
We are staying over night and will probably end up doing a Target (or whereever) run for those things she forgot. On Thursday hubby and I are flying to NYC for a long weekend getaway as “empty nesters”
Our move-in time is Monday afternoon – coming from DC. The plan is to do the Target/BBB run earlier in the day and meet him the next day to go buy a used bike. Then skedaddle.
We are doing the good-bye meal on Sunday night. For us, the Twin Cities is somewhere new, so we parents built in some time for a bit of tourism after saying good-bye.
