Am a Uof R alum and while my experience goes back to the dark ages, will share what I know from visiting with son. I am very proud of the changes and evolution of the UofR. The science facilities are excellent for a school that size, they have a new theater arts complex. I received an email from U of R last week from James Appleton (retired President and now interim President announcing Stuart Dorsey’s resignation). As lamom has indicated, the administration and the profs (in fact all the staff) really, really have the students as their primary concern.

Location is prime, you are 30 minutes from skiing, an hour from the beach, 45 minutes from Palm Springs…but there is plenty to do on campus.

My son was accepted to Redlands and Denver University- both with merit scholarships for music and pre-med (sciences) . What to do??? We are going to visit both!

so, im a senior in high school right now and was accepted to U of R. at first i only applied there as a back-up school, but then after i got rejected from my top choice, i was devastated. i had an overnight scheduled that same weekend and so it was a great way to get my mind off of the rejection. i went there on a sunday, and it was seriously, the best decison of my college decison process. i went there and completely fell in love with everything relating to the university. i totally could see myself going there, being happy, and making the BEST out of my college years. redlands offers so much to their students that isn’t common among larger schools. i mean, i was there on pi day, (3-14) and my host and i along with a bunch of her friends went into the kitchen of the dorm rooms and made 4 pies together. it was such a great thing to get to meet all the students that were there and see that it is possible to make a home out of a college campus. the next day i ate breakfast in the commons, then had a meeting with the community service director, attended a government class, and met with the golf coach. it was surreal. after living 24 hours on this campus is did NOT want to go back to my high school. i love it. although i have not officially decided to go here yet, i have already made up my mind. i joined the group on facebook and have already made so many new friends. that is not something you find at every college either. every single person i have met/talked to at the university of redlands actually cares about you and your opinions. they all WANT to get to know you. just sitting in the dinning hall with my host the first night, people across the table from me introduced themselves and asked me questions. i had no idea that i would ever be so interested in a small liberal arts school, but now i can’t see myself going anywhere else!
i love redlands, GO BULLDOGS! :D

Dear Allyssalynn,
Congratulations. Son had similar feelings. Redlands is his family. I’ve visited enough the past 6 yrs to make friends with other parents. Wish it was my home :)

My daughter has decided that University of Redlands where she is going this fall. Alyssalynn I first wondered if you were my daughter, she had a similar experience. She wasn’t into it at first, then went for a visit and the admissions office was so great. After she went for the overnight she was very enthusiastic about the school. Going to admitted students day clinched the deal for her and we put the deposit down that day. She loves how available all the teachers are, she went to several classes and just loved the student-teacher interaction. The teachers engaged the students and really treated them like adults. When we went to the admitted students day several people recognized her from her overnight and she really felt at home. She is super excited about her choice!

I love the personal attention they give to students, the outdoor program where you can cheaply go on mini-trips with a guide for the weekend (and they “lend” you the equipment i.e. skis, tents, whatever you need). I like that the safety office seems involved on campus and is willing to give students rides in the evenings so they are safe. They have a free taxi service to take you into the downtown area (for shopping, eating, errands, etc). The dorms seem nice and I like that 80% of the students live on campus. The parent panel on admitted students day was made up of local parents (which I liked as we live nearby) and they said that there is so much to do on campus that their kids don’t come home all the time.

Our daughter is graduating this year. ComDis major. If you are considering this school you should ask about job placement and career guidance. The ComDis dept. is lacking BIG TIME in these areas. Her councilor gave her the wrong advice about grad school and has been no help to her in obtaining an SLPA cert. We are extremely disappointed!! Also, I believe the school is in deep financial trouble.

What happened with your daughter? Can you elaborate? Are her peers in the ComDis major experiencing the same thing? My best friend’s daughter is starting in the fall with this major, can you give me any advice to pass on about your daughters experience?

Also, can you give more info on the financial trouble? How are the financial troubles affecting the current students?
