Well, now that I've sent my app...

Chances!

Just before xmas break, I sent of all my other college apps. The wait is, well, grueling, but I'm starting to take an intense liking to Oberlin.

White male from Tucson, AZ
GPA: 3.4ish
ACT: 27, though if superscored, 28

Taken only 2 APs, though school only offers 7. AP Spanish and AP English Literature. I've excelled in english, spanish, history, and art. I've struggled in math and science.

I am taking Japanese language classes at my community college.

Am also involved in a rigorous masterwork program at my school in which seniors may create a project that takes the entire year to make. The project must be a combination of academic and extracurricular passion. Previous masterwork projects have been diverse, with some students writing symphonies and others conducting various biochemical experiments. I will create a graphic novel.

ECs:
Heavily involved in visual arts, and have been taken art classes in and out of school for the past 5 years. Have helped set up the school art show every year and have participated in regional shows.

Studied Japanese independently for a year and studied abroad there over the summer. Am now taking classes at a CC.

Became National Art Honor Society member in sophomore year. Am vice president in senior year

Have been in Student Recruitment Committee for 3 years of high school. (I'm essentially a tour guide for prospective students to my school.)

And various class officer positions. President in 9th, VP in 10th, secretary in 12th.

My essays were excellent. I wrote about an experience in Japan. I also sent another essay about my fascinations with tea.

My Why Oberlin essay was good, referecning Oberlin's art rental program and museum.

And, lastly, I had an off campus alumni interview that went VERY WELL.

So....What do you think?

I have no idea what we look for in GPA, but the rest seems promising!

Yeah, you stand a good chance. Good luck.

I think you will do great!

Gee, you look good. I hope you get in...gl!

"I will create a graphic novel."

You rock. I'm taking a Graphic Narrative course at Oberlin that's right your alley. Are you going for East Asian Studies (Japanese Language)? If so, you're headed for the right place. The EAS program here is excellent- students swear by their profs. Best of luck, you seem solid!

Hah, thanks noir stork. I never knew Oberlin had a Graphic Narrative course! Yeah, I'm making a graphic novel whose art is inspired by that of Japanese graphic novelists (think anime-esque.) Should be cool.

Wow...Now Oberlin sounds even more fantastic. I'm still concerned about my low-ish GPA though..

Oni-
The Graphic Narrative course is taught be my advisor, Dan Chaon, an amazing professor. The waitlist is pretty long. There was a Comics and Animation course done through Cinema Studies in the fall, which was more theoretical, while the Narrative course is more practical. I'm psyched. There are a lot of comics people here- my freshman year, I took a student-taught class on Zines and the student newspapers/mags all have comics, some of which sprawl, quite a bit.
Another option: a very close friend of mine designed an Independent Major in Narrative Arts, working with the Art and English Departments.

As for your GPA, don't fret. If you feel really bad, send a little letter about your grades and what you were up to. Your extracurrics sound pretty neat and you have initative. When I applied, my math/science grades were pretty rotten. Don't give up hope. Hopefully I'll see you soon!
