Hi guys. So i have kind of set my mind on Applying to Wharton ED in senior year. Now, what i am wondering is, would a tough B-school like Wharton and Upenn itself want a well rounded student? Or rather a person with all business things. Like, these past 2 years, i have focused myself on different things i enjoy. I like writing so im on the paper. I love the environment so i am an activist. I love chess so i play for the team. And also Tennis. So, is this okay for Wharton? Or would they rather prefer a person with mostly business related activities and all. Btw, i wont change anything in my ECs, i just want to know out of curiosity.

I had no business-related activities (besides... having a job? yeah, cashier experience does not make for a good investment banker, lol) and I got in ED. Just be passionate (no, I don't know what that means, but everyone said it to me this time last year) and you'll be fine.

I'm sure that they want a little of both. You should be a well-rounded person, but also be passionate about something you truly like. Your ECs sound like your doing them for the right reasons, but they are different. If you highlight your interest in one specific (can or can not be business-related; for me, its baseball), you should be ok

lol the only similarity in my ECs i can find is "i want to give back to the world". lol, i play chess and tennis to get better along with helping kids get better, i write for the paper cuz i want to give back to the social/informed classmates, i am an environmental activist because i love the world. Too cliche'd and fake. I would never write about something like that. So according to jkterrapin, i should highlight one of those ECs and take it far?

I don't know how much you devote to each activity, so its hard to say...i wouldnt stretch the whole giving back thing to much.

if you're a big environment person, talk about the things you do. have u joined clubs, started programs, raised awareness, done community service, etc.

do you study chess a lot? do you read about it and try different strategies?

these are some things you can highlight if they are applicable

i would say they probably prefer some focus, but they don't require business-related experience. they want smart, motivated, hard-working students who want to learn about business at their college.

yess ^ ^ ^ thank you. i was somewhat under the impression that Wharton only really wants kids who dedicate their lives to business (after seeing so many applicants having started their own business and taking Business classes >_>) Thanks guys.

You should have a bit of both.. You shouldn't devote yourself completely to business... Wharton would like some business experience, but they also want characteristics that will make you a good business leader and a good member of the UPenn college community.
