Well this seems to blow...

How do you know that Protean? Do rooms in the traditional dorms really open up? It doesn't seem highly likely to me, but what do I know.
Also, for Brownies out there my room assignment says "A1" and I'm in McGuffey. Would I have a fireplace? What view would I have? Thanks

Do you have any idea about the Balz? Is it apartment type? If you have some knowledge, please share.

Is it possible to see some photographs of the exterior/interrior? If the room no. starts with 4, does it mean the fourth floor? Are there elevators for regular student use? OMG, I have so many queries!! Can anybody throw some light on Balz:)

Balz is suite/apartment style, and only Woody and Cauthen have elevators that are restricted to residents and their guests. You are definitely on the fourth floor, Rintu. If you want to check out the dorms, check the housing website or check the display rooms at orientation.

Rooms sometimes open for various reasons.

in brown a1 is the outside room (w/ fireplace - it doesnt work though) and a2 is the inside

Thank you hazelorb! That's nice to know. I didn't think that the fireplace would work, but I wanted it anyway! I'll get some sort of fake fire light thing to put there and it will be great!
My room ends in an odd number. Any chance you can tell me the view? Views are big with me. I'm looking forward to Brown.

jimmyjam, you have a Private Message that I would thoroughly like you to read :-).

and wow at srk_fx. I feel thoroughly screwed over now. You didn't even get selected and your living there... but I am first on the waitlist, if you hadn't been put there (by accident?) then I would be living there... wow

Don't think that I am blaming you or anything.... i know its not your fault, but thats still upsetting...

edit: that is, if srk_fx is a male, if not then it would have been good news for the first girl

For all out there. I am posting with my little brother's name: Jimmyjam. But, I am a girl, woman, lady--all of the above. I am fascinated with the concept of Brown College, but think I'd be really happy in the Old Dorms or Alderman. Is there any female out there that wants to switch. Or, are there any RA people out there that can offer advice on a student finding a happy situation.
There are people trying to change their assignments===like me. Is this the best venue?

ehiunno: i have no clue wat happened...i found my roomate's name on the waiting list so i probably thought that they had a few places still left after going through the waiting list.

Also,i send my app a bit late and it probably reached there like a week after the deadline.
Im sorry for watever happened with you and i hope that u somehow get in.

um if youre in brown you cant just switch, we have an application process remember? you would have to contact someone on the waitlist.

Forgive me. You are so right hazelorb. I was stuck in an airport trying to re-route my flight and I wrote in haste. I am very comfortable with Brown, residential life, and am looking forward to buying a nice carpet for my room!

I was surprised that I got put into a single. Not only is it going to be lonely, it's just waaay expensive. Like if I were in McCormick I'd be paying only $3600 and since I'm in a Malone single, I'll be paying about $4600. It's insane. But I guess since there's a/c and a microfridge it's gonna be more expensive. I've come to terms with my housing assignment. It's just that Malone is just so far away from classes!

And oh yeah, like what jimmyjam said, do rooms in the traditional dorms really open up? I've emailed housing though.

Joanee I think you are over-worrying. With the buses you won't be far from classes.

And as for socialising, you can go over to parties/events in other dorms anytime.

How did you find out what dorm you got? I haven't gotten anything in the mail recently from UVA.

Thegreatjaadoo,
Go to http://www.virginia.edu/housing/, then incoming first year undergraduates, then view your 2007-8 assignment, log into net badge, and voila!

yea hereford 1st yrs were known for partying more than anyone else, at least 2 yrs ago. im sure its not your ideal situation but they overenrolled the class this yr and are slowly converting hereford to 1st yr dorms while they redo the new dorms (lots of construction there!!), so uh at least you're not in a triple waking up to construction every morning at 8am??

I'm feeling more and more blessed everyday.

Joanee- there's always things going on in the Tuttle lounge each week for only first years. Go to those. Also, I knew two people last year who their roommate just never showed up (no, we don't know the story of why), so they had singles. So, keep your ears open if you really want to move. But frankly, there's others just like you that got 'screwed' and yes it's a hike to see people in Old Dorms and to classes, but who cares. It'll keep you in shape. If you don't make a ton of friends, it's your own fault, not by where you live. If you're in a single, bring an inflatable air mattress (you can get a queen size at target for $30-50) and that way you can have friends come stay on your floor (or they can always hop into bed with you, sleeping two, or three, in a twin XL isn't hard). You'll be fine, enjoy your first year. I didn't get the first year experience at all, and I'm gonna do fine, so worry not! :)

Well thanks for all that. I've met some people living in Hereford and Malone/Weedon through Facebook and we've bonded over living so far away from everything. Haha. But I'm actually quite excited now. My first year is gonna rock! Haha. I can't wait.

Joanee,

If you're going to be in a single, better to be in Malone than the old dorms. Single rooms in the old dorms were terrible. The rooms literally are in the stairwells and because the fire doors are closed, you don't have the interaction you normally would have with people going up and down the halls.

Combined with the fact that the room is like 3 feet wide and 12 feet long and it was well over 90 degrees in March and April in my room at night, Malone is a godsend comparatively.

yea one of my best friends had a single in old dorms last yr. she is quite pleased to now be in brown. the slanted ceiling was really close to her bed, which was lofted because there really was only that much room. poor girl.
