Reflection

Frankly, I was overjoyed when I read my decision; I thought I’d be rejected. My objectives suck! Yet, I still managed to be waitlisted…how curious.
Strengths: Essays. For me, writing is a way of life and thus I am able to use words to my advantage. My common app essay blew everyone who read it away–my mom always knew I was a decent writer, but when she read it, she nearly teared and said: “my baby’s going to be a writer.”
Also
My English Teacher loves me and is very impressed with my writing, philosophical ideas, etc.
My physics teacher supervises STUCO and probably talked about my growth into a confident woman ( I have social anxiety disorder).
Weaknesses: GPA

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: read below.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

General Comments:

Demonstrate a spike. My spike was by far my writing and my ability to speak to my audience. However, the spike alone is never enough. Don’t let your weaknesses drag you down severely; they shouldn’t be so blatant. No one is perfect, but, paradoxically, balance in tandem with a focused specialty or expertise is what most likely grants your acceptance at a highly selective institution.

My grades suck(ed), but then again I let myself go and stopped studying due to several personal/mental issues. Don’t do what I did, be resilient. But at the end of the day, let whatever happens become a learning experience.

(I’m happy nonetheless)

[asize=7]Decision: Accepted[/size]
I have no clue if I did this right but we’ll see…

Reflection

Strengths: SAT score, GPA, loved my common app essay
Weaknesses: Honestly I didn’t think my Why Wellesley essay was all that great. I did Early Evaluation, and I only ended up doing it after not getting into my top choice ED, so I was kinda in no state to be writing essays.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: To be honest, I’m unsure. I did visit several times (although it’s basically in my backyard), and they might take that into account.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted UMass Amherst, Smith (with STRIDE scholarship), Colby (with Presidential scholarship), Wellesley. Waitlisted at Bowdoin

General Comments: You never know. It’s such an impersonal thing these days, do not feel bad ANY of you who got an unwanted decision. You are amazing, strong, fighting women and will do great things. Just applying to Wellesley at all proves that.

Guess I’ll add my stats here?
Objective:

Summer Activities: I work, that’s pretty much it.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 8, My math teacher, I have always struggled in math but dedicated my life to Precalculus last year (one of the hardest courses at my school) which my teacher was aware of. I showed an upward trend in that class too. She is someone who values self-improvement over grades (mine were lackluster) so that was useful for me.
Teacher Rec #2: 9.5, English teacher/GSA advisor. I’ve known her since freshman year, she really likes me as a person. I was one of the only people in her class that was passionate about the material. I didn’t do well on the final project but she said it wouldn’t affect my rec so…yeah.
Counselor Rec: 5, My counselor likes me but we’re not super close.
Additional Rec: None
Interview: Off Campus over Skype, it did not go well.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: CS
State (if domestic applicant): MA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Black
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 140k both parents??
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Woman of color interested in STEM

Reflection

Strengths: ACT score was pretty good, CA essay was strong: I wrote about my experience about my mostly white high school and how that prompted me to create my club. The essay was well written according to my english teacher so…wooo…
Weaknesses: So many. I have a low GPA (around a B+/A- avg), not a lot of community service opportunities or leadership roles.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Wellesley is centered around community service, which I did not have an abundance of. Low GPA, and bad interview.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted UMass Amherst (Honors + CS), Colorado College, RIT, UMaine, Northeastern & WPI. Still waiting on Smith and have my fingers crossed!!

General Comments: I’ve been very lucky in the college process. @ prospective students apply to reach schools, EA if possible. I wanted to apply to Wellesley but didn’t at first bc I thought I wouldn’t get in, and missed the EA deadline. Don’t be me.

Right forgot to mention I was waitsted

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1400, 720 reading, 680 math (I don’t remember what I got on the writing, sorry)
ACT (breakdown): NA
SAT II: NA
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top ten percent (my school ranks on the decile system)
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP French (5), AP Spanish (5), AP World (4)
IB (place score in parenthesis): NA
Senior Year Course Load: I’m a dual-enrolled student and take half of my classes, Macroeconomics, Humanities in the US, Environmental Science, and Anthropology of Globalization, at the local college. At my high school I take AP Gov, AP Lit, Journalism, and Culinary.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None. My school doesn’t really participate in national awards and I haven’t really done anything award-winning. I’m an AP Scholar if that helps.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Ballet (14 years and was a principal dancer in a local company), Human Rights Commission (2 years, committee leader), Commission on the Status of Women (1 year), Interact Club (4 years, VP as a junior), QSA (1 year, treasurer)
Job/Work Experience: Internship at local paper
Volunteer/Community service: I volunteer very frequently at a local art gallery (2 years) and do a lot of tutoring in Spanish (4 years).
Summer Activities: NSLI-Y Arabic Summer (language learning program), Middlebury Monterey Language Academy (two summers in the Spanish Academy and one in the French Academy), and Ballet
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I didn’t really like how my Common App essay turned out. It wasn’t very descriptive and did more telling than showing. Right before I checked my portal, I reread my supplements and couldn’t believe how poorly they were written (at least for my standards), but I really liked what I wrote because it was personal to me and my experiences and how I would be affected by a Wellesley education. All of my essays did tie my common theme together though, which I did like.
I really don’t know if I can rate my own essays accurately, but I guess I would give the Common App one a 6 or 7, and the Wellesley ones maybe a 7 or 8.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Okay these are all super subjective because I have only read my recommendations and didn’t really have anything to compare.

Teacher Rec #1: My AP World teacher wrote this for me and I really liked the letter. I would give it maybe an 8 or 9.
Teacher Rec #2: I asked my computer science teacher, who I’ve had for three years, but I didn’t read the letter.
Counselor Rec: I liked what my counselor wrote for me. We have a pretty good relationship and she knows a lot about my personal life and who I am, so that’s good. I would give it a 9.
Additional Rec: NA
Interview: I connected with my interviewer pretty well I guess. We had similar interests and mutual connections, so we were able to talk a lot about that.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: no
Intended Major: International Relations
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: small public school
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 500,000+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection

Strengths: Really passionate and informative essays that I think really conveyed my personality. I think my interview helped, too. My ECs demonstrated my interest in all the things I hope to pursue in college.
Weaknesses: test scores, GPA, lack of awards, crappy essays
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I painted a really good picture of the type of student that I am and the type of person who I would be at Wellesley. It was a very cohesive and connected application, and I’m really passionate about the things I do, and I think that showed through my application.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:Syracuse (accepted), and I’m still waiting on some more schools.

General Comments:

I’ve always been interested in reading the results threads of the colleges I’m interested in, so I hope this helps future applicants. I’m elated to be part of the class of 2022. I can’t wait to meet everyone at SOC!

Teacher Rec #1: probably discussed how I manage to still do well in school despite unfortunate home/personal circumstances

Strengths: essays and supplements, character, test scores
Weaknesses: grades… my home life is a mess + I work 30 hours a week, I definitely can’t afford to be a straight-A student, though I definitely would be if the circumstances were different…
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my intellect, personality, and work ethic really shone through my essays and recommendations, hitting it off with an admissions counselor I met may have also helped

General Comments: I likely won’t be able to afford to go.

Volunteer/Community service: not much- most of my community service is from working in the writing and math center at my school
Summer Activities: Theater, theater, and more theater
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common app essay:9- It was about how my four year old self influenced my current self, and how what I did and how I behaved then translates to my interests and personality now. My college counselor and another college rep who read it really liked it and said it made me seem really friendly and like a nice person they would want on campus
Why Wellesley Essay: 8?
I wrote about all the traditions on campus and why I like those traditions/how they are similar to the sense of community at my school now, and also about the student-faculty debates in conjunction with my desire to be a politician
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 9- from my AP English teacher who I had my junior year as well, I think she talked about how I am pretty energetic and not afraid to be wrong in the classroom (take a lot of risks and not afraid to contribute)
Teacher Rec #2: (8) my 11th grade Physics teacher- I got an A in the class and got along with the teacher really well but physics wasn’t really my thing, but she’s known me a long time and my college counselor encouraged me to ask her since she writes amazing rec letters
Counselor Rec: (10) my college counselor is my mom’s best friend who works at my school and she has known me forever and I think she also put quotes from my drama teacher for the past four years in her letter. She knows me super well and likes me a lot and only has about 20 students so spent a long time on each rec letter
Additional Rec: none

Reflection

Strengths: SAT score, Extracurricular commitment to theater (TONS of hours and time commitment), my common app essay and counseler rec
Weaknesses: I’m the most typical white girl ever (nothing super interesting/no hooks), not taking science/language my senior year
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that I just seemed like a pretty nice and chill person. My application made me seem super friendly and so I think they just thought I’d be a nice person to have around? My test scores and stuff are pretty good but I think that just being a nice person and having that come across helped a lot
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: planned to apply to Kenyon, Georgetown, Cornell, Smith, UNC Chapel Hill, and Colgate but was accepted ED so I didn’t apply to those schools!

General Comments: can’t wait to meet you all at Wellesley!

@filipiyes which country are you from?
