Were there more students accepted to college this year than last?

I go to Stony Brook University. This year, they accepted an alleged 50% of Freshman applicants. A huge increase from last year. I was wondering if this was a trend with other colleges as well, or if it's just SBU.

Well 2009 was the peak of the child boom I guess you would say, so in 2009 there were the most applicants of all time. It remains to be seen if 2010 will be less or more but it would seem to me if people are calling 2009 the peak then 2010 would drop off a bit. Anyway, this means that some schools that had the resources to take more students did, while others who couldnt just became more selective because there were way more students applying for the same number of slots.

Unless the school is growing, if they accepted a higher percentage of applicants they had reason to believe their yield would be lower. Perhaps their typical applicant was more likely to choose a CC in this economy. Many non top privates had to accept more to fill their class last year and will this year, but this is unusual for a state school.
