wesleyan or tcnj?

i'm currently deciding between tcnj and wesleyan. obviously, there are some major differences, including location (tcnj - southern nj, wesleyan - ct) and size (tcnj - ~6250, wes- ~3,000). to be honest, these factors don't really concern me. i'd be happy at either school. i care mostly about money. for me to attend wesleyan, i'd be paying over $60,000 more. do you think the extra money is worth it? is wesleyan that much better than tcnj? any insights you can give me would be extremely appreciated! thanks!

A female from New Jersey (with no other hooks) would need pretty good grades to get into Wesleyan, so I’m guessing you were accepted at a number of other colleges. What other offers are you turning down in favor of TCNJ?

i applied to a lot of match/safety colleges in light of this lovely economic situation. i got waitlisted at my reach-matches: amherst, middlebury, and williams (any advice on that, by the way? is it worth staying on the list?). i was accepted at the university of rochester, university of vermont, and fordham university. i’m waiting to hear from princeton but obviously not exactly counting on that haha. at this point, what with financial aid packages and personal preferences, i’ve mostly narrowed it down to wesleyan or tcnj (or possibly a,m, or w depending on that whole waitlist situation). help! lol

if you think you’d be happy at both, you’d be happy at both. that’s good.

that said, wes is a much “better” school in terms of academic reputation and the intelligence of people you’d be surrounded by.

there are no bad choices  good luck

thanks pig  are you going to wes?

Yes

Haha when you call me pig it reminds me of the movie Babe (“come, pig”)

haha that’ll do pig, that’ll do.

helpp convince me to go to wes lol

i mean, you should go where you want to go… but it sounds like you want to be convinced to go to wes, so… :)

i don’t know, the people are just passionate and smart and awesome. come :)

Yo – that’s what WesFest is for!

That’s cool that you’re from Bergen County (according to your other thread). It’s where both my parents grew up; most of my extended family is still in the area.

Oh, and choose Wes.

hey! fellow bergen county resident here. i actually just went to the merit scholar dinner reception for tcnj tonight and it really does sound like a great place to be. everyone really loves it there, however, i gotta say, i’m still way in favor of wes.

My youngest daughter (we’re in Bergen County too) was just accepted to TCNJ… and Wesleyan & Amherst as well. Right now, she favors Wesleyan because of the specific academic departments that interest her. Why don’t you take a closer look at the relative course offerings at each school?

TCNJ is a great school. From my perspective, the only downsides are lousy food and little to do off campus. That said, it typically places very high on “Happiest Students” polls. We have family friends there right now who love it.

However, if cost is a consideration (i.e. you’ll be left with loans after graduation), Wesleyan is not going to help you earn more out in the real world. The question is whether any intangible benefits you receive (such as being surrounded by a more diverse group of exceptionally talented students) are worth it. Only you can decide that. From my perspective, such intangibles are worth the price. However, if cost is an important factor, I’d pay a great deal of attention to TCNJ.

thank you guys so much for your opinions! i’m strongly leaning toward wesleyan now. the people just seem so interesting and awesome. and hey, you only live once - I might as well make the most of my four college years, even if it means indebtitude after graduation. ;)thanks so much for your opinions! who’s excited for wesfest ?!
