Wesleyan U or Carnegie Mellon U. for Biology?

How to decide?

These are COMPLETELY different schools! I really cannot see a person being equally happy at both. I would say off the top of my head that CMU is better for science in general, but a few people on these boards have said sciences at Wes are a hidden gem! Good luck with your decision :)

I happen to love both schools for many things. :(

We were at Wesfest last weekend and took a tour of the science facilities. They were beyond impressive. I am hoping, given the open curriculum, my son will take a science course which might lead to more science - even though his direction seems to be in the humanities. So many wonderful options at Wes :)

I find few overlaps between the two schools. They are fundamentally different. I think you and me are probably amongst a select few deciding between Wes and CMU. If it helps I’m prob going to Wes.

I was deciding between CMU and Wes and made a good friend trying to make the same decision. We both chose Wes because it ****ing rocks. I know I will be so much happier at Wes. I could easily tell after visiting the campus because it was the most amazing weekend they had had then and it was probably 80 degrees, and even though the campus was beautiful, I just wasn’t getting a good vibe at CMU. I could also tell there was going to be NO social lfe. If I didn’t like it that much in that weather, I knew I would absolutely hate it in bad weather. I have not even come close to regretting the dicision. That same weekend I went to visit I also dropped by Wes and could tell immediately it was the place for me. Wes>CMU in every way. And that is no joke, it is true on paper too. Wesleyans bio is one of the best of all LACs. You can see out of these 3 other people who are also telling you they had to make the decision, they all chose Wes. It was for good reason too.

i said this before on another post; CMU is only good for computer science and those fields; anything else with some exceptions (bio isnt one of them) is just middle of the road. And in terms of prestige and things CMU is no better than Wes, and Wes maybe even more prestigous to some. Wesleyan’s science is very under-rated. i went to wesfest and they said wes recieves about 5-7 million a year fedeeral funding for their science grad programs; they only have about 150-200 grad studends and 5-7 million on them is over kill; the remainder is sent to undergrad sciences making Wes THE BEST LAC science school.
