Carnegie mellon vs Wesleyan

So far, i am considering either Carnegie Mellon and Wesleyan. I am most likely going to major in Math, Economics, business or physics (pretty much undecided). But for these majors, which is better?

Also, CMU requires me to pay over 30k per year, while wesleyan only wants me to pay 7k per year. Is it worth it to pay over 20k for CMU? my parents can pay around 15k per year but i will have to take loans for the rest.

I will be majoring in mathematics-economics at Wesleyan because they have a fantastic Econ department and the school is amazing. I turned Tepper and H&SS both down because I knew they weren’t any better than Wesleyan’s academics and CMU’s connections and career services couldn’t even touch Wesleyan’s. I was sure that upon graduation, Welseyan would give me so many more opportunities (except maybe not if I majored in computer science) and add that to the fact that when I visited CMU I absolutely hated it because there was NO social life and so many people seemed unhappy going there, and constantly discussed where they would have rather gone instead, I knew Wesleyan was the best fit for me. Don’t think Wesleyan is better because it’s cheaper, rejoice because you get to go to a much better school that is crazy awesome for less money.
In short, Wes is better than CMU in all these categories and carries more prestige for most of everything. I’m surprised so many more people had to make the same decision as I did, seeing how these are the most different schools. Good luck in choosing, but if you choose Wes, you chose right.

^I totally agree! CMU and Wes are so so so different and yet I found myself with the same decision. Thinking about it now - weird (lol)! But if it helps, I am going to Wes next year - and yes, I do honestly believe they have more to offer than CMU ever will both socially and academically.

to be quite honest with you, CMU only excels truly in computer science and those related fields. Anything besides that at CMU with some exceptions is middle of the road; youd be much better off at Wes and youll be in a much better place financially

How is engineering at Wesleyan compared to CMU? My major is most likely going to be math-econ or engineering

The math-econ major offered at Wes is tops among the LACs, it is one of the reasons why I chose Wes over CMC. I do know that CMU is more well-known for engineering because one of my friends applied there for it.

Wesleyan does not have an engineering major, but the math-econ major is very, very strong.

Wesleyan offers a 3-2 engineering program with schools like Columbia and CalTech. Check it out here: [Wesleyan University Physics Department Undergraduate Information](http://www.wesleyan.edu/physics/ugee/3-2.html).

so is it possible to get an engineering degree if i choose to attend wesleyan by choosing the engineering program?

it says that i would have to spend 3 years at wesleyan then 2 at columbia/caltech. Do i begin this program freshman year and then leave wesleyan senior year and spend 2 years at columbia/caltech as part of grad school? or is it considered 5 years in undergrad?

It’s a five-year undergrad program: you receive a BA at Wesleyan at the end of your third year and a BSc in engineering at CalTech or Columbia at the end of your fifth year (second year in the engineering program). It’s a special interdisciplinary program offered by Wesleyan, so if you’re interested in it I would recommend letting your academic advisor know as soon as possible.
