i am looking at many liberal arts and som of my top choices are pretty much reaches -but i can hope right?? anyway i am looking at connecticut college, reed college and wesleyan as my top schools most likely and was wondering if wesleyan is the most difficult to be accepted and maybe some of the differences of these. i know that they are all very different. conn is much more preppy and reed is crunchy weird (as in cool) and i think they are all academically challenging. if anyone knows about all or any of these schools i would love some info!!!

Wesleyan is probably the most difficult to get into of those three.

I didn't look at Connecticut College, but I did visit Reed and Wesleyan (and had a really hard time deciding between them.) These are a few of my observations, though of course they're subjective:

Size: Reed has a classic LAC campus and a small, close community. Wesleyan is more than twice Reed's size, and it feels more like a small university.

Social environment: Wesleyan has a more diverse student body, while Reed seems to appeal more to a specific social niche. (Socially, a Reedie would definitely find a crowd at Wes, but a Wesleyan student wouldn't necessarily fit in at Reed.)

Academics: Reed has more of an intense academic culture, but Wesleyan has a wider variety of opportunities. Reed has Hum 110, quals, and the senior thesis; they're also arguably stronger than Wesleyan in areas like classics. Wesleyan has the College of Letters and the College of Social Sciences, and five-year bachelor's/master's programs in the sciences; they also have stronger offerings in the arts.

Extracurricular life: In general, organized extracurricular activities seemed more important at Wesleyan than at Reed. Perhaps because of Reed's academic rigor, Reedies seemed to want to spend their non-academic time doing things that are more lighthearted and spontaneous. Which is not a bad thing at all - but if ECs are a big part of your life, and you want to be able to make a serious commitment to a political group or musical ensemble on-campus, you may find it difficult at Reed. Wesleyan also has a much bigger athletic program - sports at Reed are intramural only.

Location: Portland > Middletown, easy.

I won't try to make this post any longer, but feel free to PM me with questions.

Oh, and if you like Reed and Wesleyan, you should definitely take a look at Oberlin. It's quite similar (and it's the school I ended up preferring :))

Also, I would encourage all visitors to this site to click on to the ACTUAL College Confidential discussion board for Wesleyan:

The one you are on was orphaned several years ago when CC redesigned the website. the mods have refused to merge the two.

of those three Wesleyan is definitely the hardest, as I know many people that have gone to both Reed and Conn College that have been declined from Wesleyan. However once you're in, it's a fairly safe and exciting ride through college

Our D is a Reed junior. I agree with everything quaere said about Reed, very fairly and accurately presented.
