West Chester University or Saint Joseph's University

I have been accepted to both schools and i am planning on doing the Air Force ROTC program. SJU has the program on campus, so i wouldn't have to worry about having a car and paying for gas and car insurance. WCU has an agreement with SJU, that you can enroll in the AFROTC program while going to WCU, but for AFROTC classes and training you have to drive over to SJU 2 times a week. so i would def have to have a car, and a decent paying part time job to be able to pay for travel expenses.

my parents don't have much money to help me pay for college, so i am going to have to take out loans. WCU is around 15,000 a year while SJU is 45,000 a year.

should i save money by going to West Chester and having to deal with the hassle of commuting for ROTC, or go to SJU and come out with a bigger debt.

Please help, im planning on majoring in either business or political science

Can’t you get an ROTC Scholarship? If not the first year, then do very well and receive a scholarship for later years? Ask the AirForce ROTC team what the deal is.

Other than cost, this is a no brainer. St. Joe’s is a fine school. Go there.

“Other than cost” is a big qualifier. I would not pay that much for St. Joe’s. It’s just not worth it, especially with military service at the end of it. Your West Chester degree/ROTC will serve you well. That said, it will be a HUGE pain to go over to SJU twice a week, especially since it is likely to be very early in the morning. (???)

yea physical training is like at 6:00 in the morning and its about a 40 minute drive from WCU to SJU if i dont hit any traffic.

I just graduated from Saint Joe’s and commissioned from the Air Force ROTC program. Goin to saint joe’s was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It made things a lot easier for me because I didn’t have to worry about driving to ROTC and back. I saw your previous message about PT in the morning. Different ROTC detachments have a different schedule, and at Saint Joe’s the 2 hour drill session is held on Tuesdays from 3 PM to 5 PM and then PT is from 6 PM to 7 PM. On Thursday, you have a “Air Force 101” class basically and that’s also from 3-6PM (or 4-6) and then PT is from 6 PM to 7 PM. So you could go to West Chester if your classes don’t conflict with ROTC stuff, but I highly recommend Saint Joe’s! I absolutely loved it there. AND…if you get a scholarship from the Air Force, Saint Joe’s will let you live on campus, for FREE!! So there are definitely a lot of perks with being a Saint Joe’s ROTC cadet. If you have any questions or anything, feel free to message me!

I would go to West Chester. It’s not worth paying that extra for Saint Joseph’s.

My daughter is interested in the AFROTC program at St. Joseph’s. She’s only a high school freshman right now, but we’d like to start the process of finding out all we can about it and the university. Would you email me privately?

Thank you.

smw1004 summed up most of what I’ve always heard in the past – SJU comes out LESS expensive for most students due to the nice merit packages.

Do everything you can to get the ROTC scholarship!

You need to know the net cost difference after any aid before you decide. If it was me, I’d go to St. Joe’s for a $5,000 a year cost difference but not a $30,000 a year cost difference.

Also, after you get an aid offer from each, feel free to contact St. Joe’s financial aid dept. and tell them you’d like to go there if the cost was a little closer.
