West Point after civilian college

Does anyone know how common it is for civilian college grads to enroll in West Point after graduation? I was looking at the application and noticed that everything is geared towards high school accomplishments, and there aren't many areas to put college accomplishments and experiences. Thanks

Don’t know how common it is, but it does occur. My rising yearling had someone in his company that had just earned a 4-yr degree and was starting all over at USMA.

I do know you can attach a resume (or could for class of 2012) to the application if there was additional information on it that was not covered in the application. I would call admissions for specific advice on this before submission to make sure this information is still current.

why don’t you just go OCS and have your commission in a year? Unless you feel like being treated like a kid for 4 years

If you have already graduated from a 4 year college, would you be able to take advanced courses and skip the basics at West point?

I am in the same boat, currently I am about to go into my junior year of college. I was going to apply for the class of 2014 ,but I was told all about how the credits transfer. They do not really transfer you have to validate ,which entails taking a final for every class you want credit for. In this case three or four years of credits is anywhere between 30 and 40 finals. Personally, I think I am just going to do OCS and finish my degree, but whatever floats your boat.

Oh I didn’t know how you could “transfer” classes like that. On the website, it just says:

Ok, I just found this

Hey I was wondering if you get written up in college one time by an RA, does West Point find out about it?

If anyone has any specific questions about college -> WP, feel free to PM me. I had two years of college before deciding to come to WP and now here I am.

phillies, I think that depends a lot on what the “write up” by the RA was for. If it means you were arrested and have a criminal record, WP will need to know. If it was for something else, it may or may not show up on your student record or transcript I suppose. Anything on your school record will of course be seen by USMA admissions. If it was something minor, I seriously doubt WP will find out about it unless you ask your RA to write you a letter of recommendation. If it would be seen as an Honor Code violation at USMA, I personally believe you would be better off coming clean with it in your app, esp. if it is something that is bothering your conscience. USMA is not looking for perfect kids, but for men and women of character. They know applicants are going to have made mistakes. I have seen others ask similar questions on this forum, and the advice has usually been to use that in your app essay questions, stating what you learned from your mistake and how it has changed your behavior for the better. Just my two cents…

hooyahmicah… i was wondering what the transition was like for you between civilian college and westpoint and if you had any credits that you were able to validate at WP?

Thanks

I applied for WP as a high school student but i was declined for admission. But i want to try for admission again at college. As a college student do you have to receive your nomination again if u already received one? And do you have to start your WP profile all over again such as writing ur statements, leadership positions, awards, physical checkup etc, or can you just keep those the same? My last question is what kind of college level classes MUST I take in order to be competitive for admission to WP? Thank you reading my post.

That’s right you have to do the four year program; however, you can take some exams during plebe summer (or at least we did when I entered in 1994) to try to get into intermediate versus basic courses…ie) I took the Spanish exam because I had 4 years of Spanish in high school and was placed in intermediate Spanish…for example.

Guess you have to figure out- Do you want to graduate from West Point for the prestige, tradition, experience? Or just go OCS?..the end result is the same …Second Lieutenant…there are great officers from West Point, ROTC and OCS…it depends on the person…likewise they all have their share of not so stellar folks… West Point is very rigorous and demanding…it would be a great achievement and you have a bond with your classmates and other pointers that last a lifetime…given that…you have to do it because you want to…and to fulfill a duty and obligation to achieve a lifetime of service to the nation whether that is serving 5 or 20 years in the military or in some other field in the civilian or federal line of work. Good Luck.

USMA '98

I honestly don’t see the point of going to WP if you’ve are already close or done with your Bachelor’s.

OCS would be your better option on all accounts. Giving up another 4 years = being 4 years behind.

I’ve given my thoughts already in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/military-academy-west-point/1003037-too-late.html</a></p>

I agree, why attend college twice? The point of going to WP or any military academy is to become an officer in the military. Simply graduating from WP isn’t the goal, so not sure of the point of graduating from a civilian college and then applying to WP.
