west point help!!

hi,

i'm new here, and have a bunch of questions about westpoint.
i'm a senior, and while many of you have wanted to go to westpoint since you were young and have been working on apps forever, i have just come to the realization that i might want to attend westpoint.

i sent out my pre-candidate questionaire, but how do i log-in the website to view my status on it? i never signed up for an ID or password, all I know is that I sent the questionaire in, and recieved an email confirming that they recieved my questionaire and were reviewing it. any ideas? if eel like i missed a couple steps on the website...

also, does anyone have any idea on what the minimum requirements for the CFA are? thats the only thing holding me back and I'm worried I won't pass..

now it's not too late to apply right? i mean i have to do everything right now, still ahve to wait to recieve the application, and i sent out my letters requestion for nominations, but i'm a bit confused on that too. all i sent out were letters saying "i would like to request a nomination" etc etc, using templates on the usma website. now this means that I will recieve mail from them containing actual forms that I will have to fill out and send back out for them to ultimately review my nomination....am i correct?

and what are my chances at westpoint? as of now:
780 math/610 verbal/720 writing
680 math IC 660 history sat II

mostly AP/Honor classes. gpa about a 3.85
varsity swimming 4 yeras. club swimming for almost 8. first team all county/ first team all-north jersey. junior national cut. sectional cuts.

church member.
church youthgroup leader.
about 40 hours of various community service.
certified lifeguard.
captain of varsity swim team.
concertmaster of new jersey string ensamble.
national honor society

how am i looking? Thanks....

Welcome pyoo323:
No it is not too late to apply, but you do need to get moving.

Candidate login site: contact your admissions representative at WP if there is no way to register on the site.

CFA: you need to practice/pratice/practice and do your best. WP does not publish minimums. If you do a search you will find previous posts that will give you more information on what other candidates "passing scores" have been.

Nominations: yes, you request a nomination packet. Follow the directions when it arrives and submit the completed packet by the stated deadline (frequently end of October)

"how am I looking": your academic scores look good (make sure you take the SAT/ACT at least twice), and you have sport (varsity swimming) and leadership (team captain); these are all things that factor heavily in your "whole candidate score" and will help make you competitive. The higher your whole candidate score, the better your chances. Without an LOA (early letter of assurance for highly competitive candidates), it often depends on how competitive your nomination district is.

Good luck!

pyoo323:

You should receive a detailed letter in the mail from West Point Admissions with your sign on and password. My daughter's came about a week after she completed the questionairre.

Also, my daughter's nomination packet deadlines are Sept 29th and Oct 6th for her senator's and congressperson. I suggest you go to your senator's and congressperson's website today and look for "Service Academy Nominations". In my daughter's case she downloaded one app, had to call for another and completed an online questionairre for the third to be mailed to her. These applications are very detailed and require recommendations and essays. What I am trying to say here is that time is of the essense and you need to move quickly.
Good Luck!

pyoo,

Welcome aboard! You're not too late, and this will certainly test your project management skills. Here are my ideas:

1) You may want to line up your teachers for recommendations. Prepare them for the fact that they will need to do about 4 letters for you - 3 members of Congress and West Point Admissions.
2) Read everything you can about the Admissions process. You'll find a lot of information on the WP website, here on cc, and also in the Smallwood book. (It's referenced many times in these threads. You can order it directly from the WP gift shop or Amazon.
3) Find out who your MALO is. He/she will be a great resource for you.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Keep copies of everything and keep track of all deadlines. Organization is really important.

After you've received your ID and password you still might not be able to log on to check your status. Before you are granted access to log on there are a certain number of items you will need to have sent in beforehand. I'm not sure what those items are (help anyone out there) but don't panic if the status site doesn't let you in immediately.

There is no place like West Point and it's well worth your best efforts to get in. Good luck!

And you may want to watch "Surviving West Point". It's a National Geographic production and a fair depiction of life as a cadet. You can buy the dvd or see if your library has it.

My daughter filled out the pre-candidate questionairre in May. She got a letter a week later with password and sign on and instructions to send transcripts in right away. At that point we could sign on but it just said "Initial Application Pending" and gave nomination information.
They look at your transcripts and questionairre answers to see if you will be "competive" before they send you the candidate kit.
They also determine if you are "competitive" before they send your name to DoDMERB.
In late August she got another letter for her to look for her Candidate Kit to arrive shortly. At that time the site opened up so we could visually see her info and progress. Her Candidate Kit arrived last weekend. As Admissions info back to them from the candidate kit they will post it and the candidate can track the progress -- i.e. see if their teachers really did send in recommendations etc.
Now some of that may change a little bit since the "application process" has already started. I would suggest that anyone starting an application now should not delay on any part of the process.
Also. you should make absolutely sure you know what you are getting into. A lot of seniors apply to big school "just to see if they can get in", however, one should never take this approach with a service academy. The journey on which you are about to embark should not be taken lightly.

You should express your interest to the swim coach, Mickey Wender, as soon as possible. There is also an athletic questionare to fill out. It never hurts to have an interested varsity coach on your side. The ODIA has an admissions officer that will help athletic candidates with questions or problems they may encounter in their application.

Thanks for all the responses!
I still need help though. I just recieved my application packet in the mail, but there is no sign on ID or password. Just a bunch of forms and what looks like a general admission information packet....

Fill out the forms and send them in. Keep copies of eveything and make sure nothing is left out. Stay organized! The responsibility of making sure West Point has everything it needs from you is yours. They are asking for a lot of information so stay on top of things.

what about my candidate login ID and password.

Do you think it might come int he mail in a few days? I only sent in my pre-candidate questionaire a week ago..
