Advice please!

Hi, I am a current sophomore in high school but have always wanted to go to one of the service academies and would really appreciate some advice on when to get started on applying and what I should be doing! Well here's the resume..

Academics:
-3.99 unweighted GPA (one stupid A- freshman year!!)
-All honors classes, took 2 AP's this year, AP History and AP Calc AB
-Class rank is 3/622
-Yet to take ACT/SAT

Athletics:
-Varsity Cross Country
-JV/Varsity Basketball
-Varsity Track
-By Senior year hoping to be captain of all 3!

Extras:
-I am a Sunday school teacher at my church
-Will be volunteering at my Mom's hospital this summer
-Member of my school's top band ensemble
-Recently accepted into NHS
-Fellowship of Christian Athletes

I am looking to add more to my "extras" area, what would help me out??

Also some questions..

Air Force Academy vs. West Point?
If I have to choose.. Summer SLS or Boys State?
General application tips/what is the first thing I have to do and when should I do it?

Thank you very much for reading, any input would be appreciated!

Hi -

Good for you, being so interested in serving your country.

West Point wants to see great grades, which you have. Make sure you take calculus, senior year. (They want to see that you can do the required math.)

They also want to see leadership positions. So, become the captain of a team or two and hold an office in some other activity.

Also, score a 700 in each of the sections of the SATs. Get yourself a Princeton Review SAT book and spend a half hour a night working through the book until you are done.

Good Luck and I think that if you do these things, you will get your LOA and Nomination.

Thank you for your input! I will make to study for the SATs, do they value the SAT more than the ACT?

There is definitely more emphasis on the ACT. But the mean value for SAT scores are in the mid 600’s, so 700 is not the minimum.
