Advice Please

I was just wondering about my chances of getting in to the United States Military Academy. I am currently a high school sophomore with a 3.650 GPA (unweighted) I am the President of my schools Chinese and French club. I am also a member of our schools books club and a hopeful for our schools Thespian Society. As of this year I have also been made prop master. I am going to be taking 3 AP classes next year. I was just wondering if I had any shot of getting into West Point was a distant dream or if I had any chance. Is there anything that I can do to help boost my chances of getting in? Any help is appreciated.

I’m a junior in high school, but I’ve pretty much abandoned hopes of a service academy. You’ve got pretty good stats by normal standards, but it would take something otherworldly to get in based on what you listed. They want the class presidents, the eagle scouts, the JROTC captains, the editors of the yearbook etc. Just being in clubs won’t help, and you’ve also got to have a near ivy league academic record as well. Someone else could correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve been to a bunch of meetings and researched intensively on WP, and I would honestly plan on another school, but apply as a reach school. From what it seems to me, you’ve got to be building a WP resume from the time you were in middle school, and I gained interest too little too late. Remember, you pay nothing from this school, and they take about 1200 freshmen for the tens of thousands of applications they get, so its only the best of the best. I didn’t even get offered admission to the summer program with a 3.88 unweighted GPA and a 4.67 weighted and in the top 2% of my class, they actually told me I needed to work on class rank.

Highly doubt that if you are truly in the top two percent that they told you that…

But the biggest problem I see here is the lack of athletics and that is pretty much a requirement for WP cadets.

So more athletics. They look for varsity letterman and all district athletes.

Thats what the letter said, to work on class rank, which made me mad because it means obviously they didn’t pay much attention to it. I wouldn’t just make that up.

Sorry about that bro, must mean they must have dismissed you :/

“They want the class presidents, the eagle scouts, the JROTC captains, the editors of the yearbook etc. Just being in clubs won’t help”
–yes, WP does look at your leadership experience, but that’s not 100% true at all. don’t skew the view. trust me, i wasn’t the class president, was never in boy scouts, jrotc, year book, but admissions never cared. it’s about how much you cared about what you’ve involved yourself into (that is reflected by the recommendations from the respective instructors in charge.)

"…, and you’ve also got to have a near ivy league academic record as well."

 • highly doubt it. just look at the avg. score on usma.edu

 • you quit because you thought it was too late to rebuild your resume? i see why wp admissions said “no” to your initial attempt/hidden potential. Why quit now? if you wanted to get into west point as bad as you want to breathe, I guarantee you that you’ll get in before you even turn 21. stop feeling sorry to yourself, get up, and re-evaluate yourself on why you were denied initially.

and the acceptance rate for class of 2015 was 18.2% (2540 / 13954)
it isn’t high at all compare to ivy schools.
don’t worry about stats. it’s just a number.

FFUSAC/
if you can show wp your true character, wp “will” definitely evaluate objectively unless you are a recruited athlete/have presidential nomination/prior.
don’t quit. it’s never too late.

good luck y’all.

I was accepted into the summer program with a 3.3 unweighted GPA and 1840 SAT scores. I think I am in the 15% of my class? We dont officialy have a class rank. I have a very high strength of curriculum however, I think its an 8 or 9. I am also second in command at my CAP squadron and have tonssssss of community service work. I play varsity v-ball and track. They are looking for the all around student. I dont know where you recvieved your information. I have been to 2 admissions briefings at West Point and met with my liason officer. They admit you on a 60%-30%-10% basis. 60% of your application is academics. 50% of that academics is your SAT score and the other 10% is your HS record. So as you can see, you dont need to be a braniac in HS. The most crucial thing are your SAT scores. Its 50% of your ENTIRE application. 30% is Leadership (CAP, JROTC, Community Service, Clubs…) and 10% is how well you do on your fitness assesment. They are looking for future Army Officers. Not Rocket Scientists.

“50% of that academics score is your SAT”

I think they would also consider an ACT score if submitted
