West Virginia

My son has started his college search he is just finishing off his Junior year of high school He is very interested in West Virginia. He plans to study Biology can anyone give me pros and cons

I am currently a freshman at West Virginia University, and is just about to wrap up my first year of college. I have gotten a lot out of WVU, but I have decided to end up transferring to Rutgers University after this year. Here are MY pros and cons to WVU. For me, the main reason I’m transferring is because I’m too far from home (New Jersey).

Pros:
-Contrary to popular belief, the school has many excellent academic programs and opportunites, including clubs, tutoring options, and so forth.
-I have met many great professors who have helped tremendously.
-The sports are a amazing here and provide an awesome experience for anyone interested in sports.
-WVU offers a huge variety of majors so it’s easy to pick precisely what you want to study.
-The biology department is very well put together and the building where it is taught is emaculate as well.
-WVU offers a great education at a pretty affordable rate for most.

Cons:
-It can be hard for many students to stay focused. Morgantown is an extremely busy city, and the night life can be tempting for people. If you can stay on task, then you will benefit so much more from this school.
-The parking in Morgantown is horrendous.
-Morgantown itself is pretty dirty. The streets are completely littered with trash.
-Some of the dorms are very nice quality, but most are not air conditioned and the policies can be extremely aggravating for many students.
-The food is very mediocre.

Overall, in my opinion WVU is a great school in a poor location (atleast for me). If your son chooses to go here, he will most likely fall in love with it, but it takes a lot of motivation in order to stay on task and excel.

I don’t know much about Bio, but I went to WVU for two years prior to transferring. I only transferred because my department didn’t have a strong program…Other than that I loved the school.
The other reply’s pros list is accurate, I’d definitely agree. There is really something for everyone here. It is a big school but between the variety of course offerings and the amount of student organizations you can still get the personal experience of a smaller school.
The cons, however… The dorm policies really aren’t that bad, not compared to what my friends at other schools have. They are fairly lax, and most RA’s don’t feel the need to be constantly on the prowl unless you give them reason to. Plus, you only have to live in dorms for one year. Many universities require two years on campus, so I’d consider this a definite plus. And, yes, Morgantown can be a little dirty, but it didn’t even come to mind until I saw the other user’s response…Because, come on, it’s a party school and huge, I didn’t come expecting pristine conditions. 30,000 undergrads, in one place? With top sports teams? Yeah, there’s going to be some trash.

But anyway, I’d recommend WVU wholeheartedly…Just make sure they have what you are looking for in terms of academics. I failed to do so, and my department ended up being so-so. Otherwise, great college experience, great people.

this is one major pro about wvu. the dorms are amazing, the classes are small, and it provide opportunities not easily available elsewhere.
