I’m currently in AP Calculus AB right now, but our school doesn’t have a BC program…so I have two options. I can take a mediocre online BC class (the FLVS content) as a sophomore next year, and then take Calc 3 at the University of New Hampshire junior year when I can drive. Or, I can take stats next year, and take BC semester 1 and Calc 3 semester 2 at UNH junior year. I’m afraid colleges will see that I don’t challenge myself sophomore year if I choose the latter option, because they see that I’m in calc right now and then just go to stats (I have a B right now…). Which option would benefit my college application?
I’ve decided that I will probably take the FLVS course, as I can at least get a good grade and it will be less stressful. Junior year I will take calc 3 or linear algebra/something else…I don’t plan to major in math; most likely com sci, which really doesn’t require much math (I think). Should I take stats next year or put it off until later?
It may vary by college, but the CS major at my college requires math through MVC and Linear Algebra plus calc-based stats at a minimum.
I would not double up on math if you’re going to scramble for a math course in a later year. Nor would I double up as a sophomore at the expense of another core subject.
If neither applies, then fit in stats where it makes the most sense for you.
Alright, I think I’ll put stats off until senior year; I’m probably going to drive up to UNH to take Linear Algebra junior year.
Here’s my likely schedule for next year—I look good to go right? Now all I have to do is talk to the administrators:
Honors Spanish 3
AP Calc BC (online)
AP Com Sci A (online)
AP US History
Honors Chemistry (you technically aren’t allowed to take AP Chem until senior year, I’m taking bio over the summer)
Honors Sophomore English
Study Hall (course load is quite a bit)
I’m not sure how I’ll manage, especially with sports, but I think the online courses offer a lot of lenience.
