WHARTON ED. Will chance back!!

Okay so a little bit of background-
My grandfather went to wharton for his PHD- LEGACY (I think)
Indian female.
I was born in US and lived there till the end of 8th grade, and so am considered a domestic applicant for financial aid purposes.
High school was-
9th india
10th US
11th and 12th india

So without further ado, let us begin-

Standardized testing-
SAT- 2280
SAT II-
Math II- 800
Chem- 800
Phy- 760 (I fell asleep in the middle; I got the test date wrong, found out at 2am, had 3 hours of sleep).

Now on to high school-

9th- all A's. 9.2cGPA/10 unweighted
Note- This was my first year in an indian school, so I'm pretty proud of myself.
I was elected for stuco, and managed the entire school spirit week that year. Was on the school tennis, chess and swim teams.
I started working at an ice skating rink, which basically meant staying at the rink and helping customers in case they needed. I also was their online presence manager- facebook- 600 likes in a couple of months- woot woot.
2nd in state- International English Olympiad.

10th-
phy AP B- B
World geo preap- B
Chem AP- C
English preAP- B
WHAP- B
Precal- C
Debate- B
I got a 4 on all 3 APs (Phy B, chem and WHAP)

EC's
Debate/ became an NFL member/ only one selected to do VLD right away.(school team)
MUN (school team)
Fencing- outside of school
Tennis- outside of school
Drama- outside of school
EC's took about 5 hours a day; practically no time to study.

Note-
okay so I knew I was only going to be in US for one more year, so I was doing my best to find stuff I really liked and would be able to continue in India. I took one of the hardest curriculums ever offered to sophomores just because I really liked
the level of the courses; the challenge was irresistible. I managed to pull up most of my grades quite a bit before the end of the year- resulting in the 4s. I'm planning on explaining this in a small letter to the admission officers.

11th and the 1st semester of 12th.(Indian school completes 1st sem by September.)
okay this is where the good stuff starts.
grades- all A's woot woot. Rank- 1/300 (They only rank per year, not based on past performance)

EC's
I love these-

DEBATE-
Started a City wide Debate club that has more than 60 members from mainly 3 schools. This is completely student run; no teacher guidance whatsoever.
Was the main student lead in organizing a debate competition at my school.
Attended 6 state level competitions with 30+ schools in attendance; won 1st prize in 2.

POLITICS-
Pretty intense 2 month internship at BJP's Bhopal HQ during Narendra Modi's election campaign.
Worked closely with city level officials- wrote/ edited speeches, managed social media campaigns, cold called voters, helped organize rallies (I also did one on my own:)) and did a bit of PR. Learnt a LOT; this is what my ComApp essay shall be about. It helped me realize my passion for politics, which I hope to pursue as a minor at UPenn.

VOLUNTEERING-
Volunteered 200+ hours so far at this NGO that helps combat unemployment by holding seminars and workshops to tach people basic stuff like basic education as well as trade skills. I helped teach computers to the people- simple stuff like word, paint, using the calculator, email, etc.

JOB-
Marketing manager at an ice skating rink. I manage their online presence- facebook- as well as manage booking for the rink. Also helped out for a while at the front desk with reservations, but had to stop because I literally had no time.

COURSERA-
Intro to corporate finance- UPenn
Intro to finance- UMich
Principles of microeconomics- University of chicago, urbana Champaign. (err I hope I spelled that right)
Introduction to logic- Stanford- ongoing
Intro to mathematical reasoning-Stanford- ongoing

SCHOOL STUFF-
Awarded "Best Writer" award.- 11th and 12th

Awarded "Most Valuable Person" during production of the programs presented during farewells (graduation) and school spirit days (annual functions).- 11th

President of the School Magazine Committee- 11th and 12th
We had 3 members; I was in charge of getting people to submit articles. This involved a bit of work as our school generally has very few submissions. We netted bout 130 this year thanks to my classroom to classroom campaigning and lots of following up.
I also did the final round of editing and decided the layout of the magazine.

Started the Big Sister tradition at school-
Basically a club where we assign 11th and 12th graders a 6th grader to show around the school and make comfortable with secondary school. (At my school, secondary meant 6th-12th, and there were no orientation nights or anything. The poor kids were freaking out). This actually started when I saw a tiny 6th grader standing outside the office and crying because she was lost.

Drumming- part of school band; lead drummer for official school functions (farewells, annual days, etc.) PS I play a drum set, not the marching band type drum.

WELL I THINK THAT'S ABOUT IT.
Thanks so much for your time guys, please comment and chance. I'll honestly chance you lovely people back, I promise.

PS My teacher recs shall be beautiful(:

UPenn Wharton ED: Reach

Catria- thanks.
Anything I can do to better my chances? more details? Any thread you’d like me to chance?

I think your ECs are pretty good and standardized test scores are in the ballpark. Recommendations and essays would be important at this point. Also, your grandfather is not considered a legacy because he didn’t complete undergrad at Penn.

Chance me back:

Hi - your stats and story are incredible. The grade 10 marks look quite shabby. Need to explain this in the application somehow. Your app will probably get read by the Adcom member responsible for Asia/India applications.

Suggest to focus on your experience working on the Modi campaign. Does the PM know you well enough to write a letter?

I think you will be competitive based on your story and your overall performance but I would definitely try and explain what happened with your grades in 10th grade. I am sure adcoms will understand the difficulty because you moved back and forth from India so maybe highlight that in your essays and use that as one of the challenges you have had to overcome. Other than that your stats are about as good as you can get and you have good ECs so just try and focus on your essays. I would say Wharton ED would be a low reach because I think you will be appealing due to your story. Best of luck! Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1657051-what-are-my-chances-for-stanford-mit-caltech-etc.html#latest

Considering you are international and from India, I would say reach/high reach

FuzzyPeaches- idk. I read that they consider grad school grandparents as legacies for undergrad applicants, though obvs not as potent. Thanks, though- i’ll do my best w/ recs and essays.

sgopal2- thanks a bunch. I will try to explain my situation the best I can. And no, I’ve never even met the PM. I only worked at a city level, but I was thinking of getting my additional rec from s city level official.
Do you think having my current counsellor explain it in my counsellor letter would work? Also, should i maybe try writing a letter to the admissions officer and having my school put it in with the transcripts?

biggestsunsfan- same thing, i was thinking of getting my indian counsellor explain it, since it would be more authentic. I’d get my US counsellor to do it, but he legitely does not know very much about me, and was trying to get me to drop a course or so most of the time. thanks for replying.

Peezus- b/c I’m a US citizen and also considered a US resident, I’m considered a domestic applicant for most purposes.

…

Should I mention helping kids prep for their SATs? Their score goal was 1900-2000 so was decently qualified.

Bump- please reply

Please chance. esp if someone has had an experience something like this. Much appreciated

b-b-b-bump

You have great ECs and have test scores that are competitive for Wharton. I really think your improvement from 9th and 10th grade to last two years in high school will really be an advantage. According to how your school does ranking, I don’t think ranking first without any past performances is a pretty big accomplishment. But keep in mind this school is a reach for pretty much everyone. I would say that you would have a slight advantage because of your grandfather. Then again you are an international student. I would say reach. A reach, but a competitive application! GOOD LUCK!

Phonix7- Thank you:)

bump one last time for tonight(:

BUMP:)

The problem is your being an international. If you were domestic, ED would be a match for you, but the international status makes it a reach. Don’t worry- with those stats there a thousand other schools begging to take you.

rlee07928- I LOVE YOU! Haha jk but seriously you are such a confidnce booster.
I’m actually considered a US resident/ domstic applicant cause we still have a house in US and pay taxes:)
