Wharton ED

I know that applying ED for Wharton gives a 30% acceptance and RD only 16%, but is the competition in ED tougher. I mean do all the more qualified applicants apply ED? In short, do I have a better chance applying ED to Wharton than RD with my 2200?

It usually gives you a slightly better chance no matter what your stats especially if you are a legacy

What gives you a slightly better chance is that the people evaluating your application know the school is your first choice and that you will enroll if they accept you. If a college is going to take a little risk on a student, they want the student to show up.

For most applicants, that is going to be irrelevant. The ED pool tends to be generally stronger and wealthier than the RD pool, and it's also full of recruited athletes, which helps make the chances of admission look much higher than they really are for everyone else. So it's not really easier to get accepted ED. But it's not harder, either. If you are close to the line, you will probably be deferred to the RD pool, not rejected, so you get a second chance if you have a chance. And for a few applicants, applying ED may make the difference between acceptance or not (even if it makes that difference in March, not December).

Thanks, that enlightened me a bit. I will apply for ED now. I think I stand a chance, even if it's slim.

angelolee69:

i think the overall acceptance rate for ED at Penn is around 30%; which includes ALL UG schools at Penn. I don't think there is a Wharton ED acceptance rate out there; only educated guesses.

If Wharton is the toughest to get into among the Penn UG schools, then the ED rate for Wharton has to be lower for the overall number to be at 30%. Hope this makes sense.

Having said that, if Wharton is truly your first choice you should go for it as ED; it will definitely give you a slight edge because of the binding factor. i.e

Last I looked, Wharton UG overall acceptance rate is 13.6%. Angelolee, your numbers for ED and RD are both wrong.

Last I looked, Wharton overall acceptance rate was 18% in 2007.

Are you sure you are talking about Wharton UG and not Wharton MBA?

I think Wharton ED acceptance rate was somewhere around 13%... and RD was around 10%....

"Are you sure you are talking about Wharton UG and not Wharton MBA?"

I was not sure, because I looked back at the data and I was looking at MBA.

Wow, yes I meant Upenn as a whole. But wow 13% for Wharton ED is slim.

KeepRolling & cbreeze:

can you direct me to a site that has the Wharton UG acceptance rates for ED and RD?

Thanks!

Here is one dated in 2005, but admission rates have been falling since then so you can extrapolate.

Admission Statistics - Hernandez College Consulting - Ivy league admission - Ivy league admissions - Ivy league consulting, consultants, consultant - college consulting - college consultants - college consultant

Here's a more recent one for the whole university, but Wharton's stats will be much lower.

Admission rate drops to record low 15.9% - News

thanks cbreeze.
