What about the Art Department?

How’s the art department at Bowdoin? I’m a visual arts major, but I’m interested in other fields of learning, like psychology and econ. With the exception of general education requirements, can I take a wide variety of classes even though I’m a visual arts major?

Of course. Bowdoin's curriculum does so by having all students fill out certain requirements. So even if you are interested in visual arts, you will have to take classes in different fields. As a first year, you will also have to take a freshman seminar. It's really difficult to just go through all four years at any liberal arts college focusing on only one subject.

I like the art department. Visual arts is actually a requirement now. Although you may not have as many options as an art school (well that is a given), there are still plenty to choose from. The art history department is also well received. Lastly, there is a visual arts/art history interdisciplinary major. Brunswick is home to many small art galleries. They recently opened this space called Frontier Cafe down by Fort Andross. Great food, a small cinema and a huge gallery space.

i love the art department. fantastic. just plain fantastic.

And don't forget how nice the Bowdoin museum will be when it is reopened in greatly expanded and renovated form in the fall of 2007. Here's a link to an article containing some info on the museum project and a new online database of Bowdoin's collection:
