I've been looking around for some summer academic program for my 9th grade son and came across the Great Books Summer Program. Here's a link to them:Greatbooks Summer Program. It involves kids staying at the college campus of Amherst, Stanford, or William and Mary. There they read passages from Plato, Jefferson, and other great tests. There follows a college seminar style discussion group. Has anyone here sent his or her kid to this program? How did it work out? What did your kid think? Thanks for your feedback.

Bumping this because I'm a student who's also interested in this program.

not much info on cc about this program. i'm sending our younger son to the wm & mary one this summer and i'll post more info after he returns!

Thanks for posting about this program - I hadn't heard of it, but am looking for a good one-week summer program, and this looks interesting.

There is a Great Books program at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, CA every summer. It is two weeks long, only for rising high school seniors,
and about 1/3 the cost of the ones at Amherst/Stanford/Wm&Mary.

the admission to the' great books summer program ' is definitely not competitive... all he needed was a note signed by his teacher that said he was recommended. we'll see what level of discussion etc happen with a more 'open' environment than the cty classes he takes.

My youngest son attended the great books summer program (Stanford) last year -- he really enjoyed it. He said the kids who went were really great -- smart, willing to discuss and participate. He thought the curriculum was well done -- just enough to keep them involved without overloading them with work. He had a great time. they do offer FA if you have need (I don't know if any is available this late). I would recommend it -- he wanted to go back this year, but he could only get FA for the one year.
