What amenities does JHU give to students

i have heard that Duke or someplace gave away free ipods to all its students and some schools give free napster or an on campus music sharing system to students. Does anyone know if there are any similar benefits that JHU gives? Is it true we have to pay for internet and television services in the dorm? besides music, tv, etc... what cool things does JHU provide their students?

I really doubt Duke or other schools give out ipods. This whole summer I was waiting for Hopkins to send me something...like a tshirt....or even a sticker....

All file sharing is disabled by hopkins, so nobody can access the free music places...but actually everyone still gets by because we can share files through the hopkins network (which is no problem, lots of rich kids with many great dvds and music to share)

Internet is like $112 each semester , plus $75 a month AHAHHAHAH have fun kids.

I love paying 45000 a year for college.

So Jhu does not give out anything free. Were not even allowed to take a bagel out of the cafeterias.

sorry.

but all in all i still love hopkins

what the hell!? are you serious!? they charge that much for internet? i don't know of any school that charges students for internet access...what the hell is that...what a scam haha

and the person above is right. last year all Duke freshman were given 20 GB ipods for free. Duke made a special deal with Apple and voila. I don't know if they're doing it again, tho, b/c I know the upperclassmen weren't given this treat.

And I hope your info on JHU is wrong b/c that is the most ridiculous, stingy thing I've ever heard. as far as banning all sharing or whatever, oh please, I'm sure it's simple to get around. you just have to be somewhat decent with computers/Internet. all they do is block certain ports, wow, change the port and you're fine.

JHU gives stickers out to prospective people when they visit...

Also, no one is technically allowed to bring anything out of the cafeteria, but with a little plannng (i.e. bringing a bag, and not carrying the stuff out in your hands) you can get away with it. I stupidly scheduled a 9-11:30 and a 12- 2:30 on the same day, so I always had to run, grad lunch, and eat on the way back across campus, no one cared.

Hopkins offers free movies at Shriver, free coffee, hot chocolate and donuts every Friday night at the Matin Center, free science / math tutoring and writing center help, free shuttles all around Baltimore, free van service within a 7 block radius, free DVD rentals from the library... and I'm sure there's more, I just don't know about it yet!

In short, don't despair - if you look for them, Hopkins has plenty of perks!

awesome... any others...?

the Duke freshman got iPods as a gift from the alumni (just to clarify). but seriously, it has to be ridiculously easy to get around that music sharing stuff. and if not, you can always mooch off the honest people who do buy CD's still. or just make friends at townson or some other school and feed off of their mp3s.

The reason the Duke freshman were given the iPods was because they are attempting to use them as educational tools (record lectures, etc)...and no, they are not doing that again this year.

educational tools? get real. if that is true, then the duke administration is dumber than it looks. that will never work.

so, Duke aside... any comments on benefits that JHU gives?

We got a coffee mug from the alumnis that said "Get back to work".... great.
