So, I'm currently a sophomore who has to select courses for junior year. I would like to study mechanical/aerospace engineering in college. I'm in the key club, and have been tinkering and flying RC airplanes and helicopters for 4ish years now, but I've always been interested in mechanical things since I was extremely young (legos, erector sets, knex). I also work a little bit at my parent's coffee shop.

My classes so far:
Freshman - Unweighted GPA 4.15
Global I H
Algebra II H
English I H
Biology H
Italian I
PLTW Introduction to Engineering

Sophomore - Unweighted GPA 4.33 (so far)
Global II H
Pre-Calculus H
English II H
Chemistry H
Italian II
PLTW Principles of Engineering

Next year I will definitely be taking AP Calculus AB, English III H, Italian III, and PLTW Digital Electronics. I was recommended for APUSH, but I have never liked history/writing and it's a lot of work. Also, I plan on taking Physics H so I can take AP Physics as a senior. I spoke with the physics teacher about taking AP Physics as a junior, but he said that a physics course is needed before AP Physics.

So with all of this in mind, what APs do you think I should take next year, and do you think I will be able to get into a good engineering school?

Hi Ben - I have the same question as you. I am a rising junior and I really do not want to take APUSH coz History is my worst subject. On the other hand, I’ve heard that colleges really want a candidate to push himself/herself in taking hard classes and APUSH has that reputation.
Instead of APUSH, I would like to double up on Science electives.

Can you take calculus BC instead of AB? You are two years ahead in math, so you should be one of the top students in math and therefore should be capable of handling a year of college calculus (= BC) over one year.

Technically I could, but I would have to override the recommendation for AB. All Pre-Calc H students who do well are recommended for AB and the Adv. Precalc-H students get recommended for BC.

That is really strange. What is the difference between Precalc-H and Adv. Precalc-H if the H is supposed to mean honors?

When I went to high school, there was just regular and honors precalculus. Anyone who finished either before senior year went to calculus. The only calculus course at the time was BC. Most calculus students were seniors one year ahead in math; an occasional junior in calculus was usually seen as the top student in math in the school.

I’ve decided to just take AP Calc AB. Question for senior year though, do you think I should take AP Calc BC (even after taking AB) or AP Stats. Keep in mind I want to be an engineering major.

More calculus will be more useful. If your engineering major in college requires statistics, it will likely require a calculus-based statistics course, which AP statistics is not.
