What are D1 sports like?

I was wondering about the logistics of D1 sports, football in particular.
Do the athletes get to go home for vacations like Christmas and spring break? Do they stay on campus in the summer to work out? Can they have a real social life?

This would probably be a better question for the athletic recruits forum. For football, you would probably have to go back to school a month or so early (not sure exactly the dates, but most likely the very beginning of august). The social life will be mainly centered around the team, as you will spend more time with them than anyone else, will have similar schedules (morning conditioning, classes, practice, film, lift), and will only be able to party when your team’s schedule permits it.

This will also depend A LOT on what school you go to. 1-A vs 1-AA is a huge distinction, and then even within those, competitive vs. non competitive. For example in the ivy league there is no post season so there’s no football come reading period, finals, winter break, and there are much more regulations regarding practice time (and much less incentive to violate them) compared to say, LSU or even 1-AA schools that regularly make it far in the FCS tournament.
