I'm visiting some friends I haven't seen in years from Harvard and was wondering what Harvard students are typically like?

From all the things that I've heard about Harvard, I think they are all intimidatingly intelligent and probably very wealthy. I imagine some of them have big egos because they go to Harvard or are people just down to Earth? I have lots of respect for people who go to Harvard and I was just wondering if there is a certain common quality shared amongst them.

The Harvard students that I know are all different. Some are really chill and humble. Others are really cocky and…annoying. Some work really hard while others are more laid back. And others are party animals. lol.

Harvard gets a lot of different types just because of the fact that all kinds of types apply to Harvard (and get in). Harvard likes having different types on campus, granted most are probably A-types who just happen to have such diverse backgrounds.

From my experience ( 2 of my friends go and I have visited) most that I have met are very intelligent but not the “stereotypical genius” one expects. All very ambitious though

Bear in mind that H has some of the world’s most generous financial aid. That has spread the socioeconomic diversity of the student body all across the spectrum.

I heard this story of when, in a presentation with a foreign leader, a student addressed the leader (speaking in the leader’s language) with the informal you instead of the formal you. After this, the other students there proceeded to laugh and make fun of him for that one mistake. Now, it wasn’t clear if this was just his friends having some fun with him, or students more scoffing at him for his lack of intelligence (in a Legally Blonde way, if you ever saw the movie). If it was the latter, is that kind of thing common at Harvard? Where you are made fun of for not being as intelligent as your peers?

Please be honest, I’m not deciding on whether to apply to Harvard or accept a spot there, but I’m just curious.

Wow, I’m hard pressed to think of a scenario in which a student addresses a foreign leader and there are enough other students who so effortlessly became completely fluent in that foreign language that they would ridicule their friend for a mistake.

What I have heard and observed is that most of the students at Harvard are intelligent, hard-working kids who understand the difficulty of mastering any subject. I’m sure there are jerks at Harvard who like to humiliate others, but you can find intellectual bullies at any college.

I wouldn’t give this particular story much credence. My guess is it’s an invented example intended to target Harvard once again as a bastion of intellectual and social elitism.

uh no, it wasn’t a made up story. I heard it from the guy himself (i think he was doing a tv interview or something and mentioned it). And the audience were other members studying in the language he was.
