ep1403 - is SAT score out of 1600 or 2400 … .it makes big difference for the replies you get… If 1500 out of 1600 then great score… if out of 2400 then needs work for UMass Amherst.

You have a pretty good shot. UMass Amherst is easier to get into in-state than an off-ramp Dunkin Donuts during the morning commute. I’d say at least a 50% chance of getting in. I have many friends that got in with around the same stats. Good luck!

ChickenPot…perhaps you should ask the 35% (that’s over one-third if you’re a little slow) of in-state students who were rejected in '08 how easy they think UMass is to get into. And that reject rate is going to be a lot higher this year.

That SAT score is on the low side but if solid ACT and solid ECs, I think it’s better than 50% chance. 3.1 GPA is decent for UMass which can overrule the bad SAT. Work on SAT/ACT over the summer and take another one in the Fall and if you can increase that a bit, then you will be in a much better shape.

Umass is pretty easy to get into. The SAT scores are certainly doable if you can get around a 1050-1100 id say you have a solid shot around 50%. If you don’t get in its extremely easy to transfer into. I to know many students who got below the mean that got in so i don’t worry to much

Heres some quick facts below as per the Umass website
Middle SAT: Critical Reading 510-620 /Math 540-640
Mean GPA is 3.56 on 4.0 scale
Average class size 41 students
17:1 student/faculty ratio

Transfer Students:
Mean grade point average: 3.16 on a 4.0 scale

SuperSlowMow…interesting how you only show a portion of the info from the UMass site. If you’d delved a little deeper (like a line below), there’s this stat: 68% of the classes (including labs and discussions) offered at UMass Amherst have fewer than 30 students.

WPI, i dont understand why you are taking offense because the 41 student average is a general macro statistic and i also included the faculty to student ratio below which is decent and sufficient stat for the general public to understand that at the more concentrated classes they do get smaller. There in lies the reasoning of why i posted those two numerical values. Clearly you are some what insecure about UMass…i also scanned through your posts like you should have to figure out where i went to school. Its pretty sad that an older gentleman who is a graduate of Umass undergrad and BU grad can call an undergrad such cowardly words such as “SuperSlowMow” real mature buddy.

DaddyWarBucks, perhaps you should ask the 35% of Massachusetts students who got rejected what their GPAs and SAT scores were. I said UMass Amherst is easier to get into in-state than an off-ramp Dunkin Donuts during the morning commute, not a Boston-area off-ramp Starbucks during the morning commute. Not everybody that applies to UMA has at least a 3.0 GPA. Last year, someone from my school applied with a 2.7 GPA and 1300 SAT score. He got rejected. That same year, somebody with a 2.9 GPA and 1500 SAT got accepted. While there are other factors to consider, it’s obvious that a 3.56 average GPA does not mean the minimum is a 3.12.

ep1403, you should definitely work on your SAT scores, but you still have a good chance. A chance is a chance, though. As I said before, it is not a 100% guarantee.
