What Are My Acceptance Chances at Colgate?

So I go to a very difficult Private High School in Cleveland Ohio. I know how many channels Colgate has to the MEdia industry and that is a field I hope to pursue. Here is part of my resume:

GPA: 3.9
ACT: 27 (30 EN, 28 MA, 25 SC, 24 CR, 10 Essay)
SAT: 1910 (570 CR, 660 MA, 680 WR, 10 Essay)
AP: US History (4) English Language (4)
SAT II: US History 640

Classes: Mostly the standard courses. I would have taken more AP courses but at the end of my sophomore year I received a concussion and missed the last month of school. Everyone therefore strongly recommended I just take the regular courses rather than pursue the AP and Honors courses.
English: 9, 10, 11, Art and Craft of Writing, AP Revenge and Justice (Literature) (Look AP Language test even though I did not take the test and got a 4)
History: 9, 10, 11, Strategy Diplomacy and War, The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, Cuban History (Took APUSH test even though I was not in the class and scored a 4)
Math: Algebra 1, Geometry Accelerated, Algebra 2
Science: Bio 9, Chem, Honors Physics
Latin: 3 Years

EC's:
Congressional Debate Captain
President of the School Disciplinary Committee
School Newspaper Vice Editor

Creator, Founder, President and Play by Play Broadcaster of our School Sports Programing Network
Gold Member of the Cadmean Society (School Service Committee)

Intern at WRIS (Social Media Service for our school in Cleveland, Ohio)

Thank you very much. Honesty is appreciated and if you have any ways of improving my resume, please tell me how i can do so. Thanks.

Colgate: Match

Not with those test scores. If you don’t need fin aid then perhaps a low match.

I would disagree, I think that the OP’s GPA, course load, and stellar ECs make up for his mediocre SATs. High match at the most.

Here are the salient facts about the Colgate Class of 2017, the strongest class ever in terms of the usual measures and diversity, as announced by President Jeffrey Herbst this past weekend at Reunion:

Average GPA for accepted students was 3.77 and enrolling students 3.67. Average SAT (CR and Math only) for accepted students was 1403 and enrolling students was 1355. Enrolling ACT is 31 which is equivalent to an SAT combined score of 1380.

High school students ranked at the top 10% of their class are 84% for accepted and 76% for enrolling students. Students coming from the top 20% of their high school class are 95% for accepted and 89% for enrolling students.

Diversity statistics are 28.7% multicultural based on race identification provided by the applicant, 11% are non-US citizens with 12% non-US residents enrolling. 8% of enrolling self-identified as Black or African-American.

I trust that this information is useful, especially as it is so timely. That said, I personally have attach little value in this quick “chance me” forum, partly since one can readily assess one’s profile relative to the information provided on the university’s own website about what’s important and in context: grades, scores, high school reputation, essays, extra-curriculars, ED, legacy etc.

Best of luck with your preparations and your search!

MUST do Early Decision unless SAT is well over 2000.

Anyone looking at this school, or any other, needs to do their own due diligence. Asking about your “chance” for admission is not a prudent approach.

Having been a member of the “Alumni Admission Program” for the last several years, the admission process appears to have become more random. It is important to diversify during the college search process.

Similar “salient facts” have been noted by many top liberal arts colleges for the Class of 2017.

You have just about as good a chance as most applicants, so why not apply? If some of your test scores are not as spectacular as they could be, so are those of students who will be admitted, though not too many of them. Cuban History? That’s interesting. I’d say – honestly – that Colgate is a bit of a reach for you, but why should that prevent you from trying for admission? I’d apply with that record, and I’d apply to a lot of other schools, maybe a couple better than Colgate (you never know), and a bunch not quite as good as Colgate. Your activities make you interesting especially the media internships which I might emphasize in my application essay. Good luck!

I think Colgate is a great school. Wish I had your extra-curriculars! I can only come up with about 4 outside of my main one unless I go to 1 day “fun run” type stuff which I can’t seem to bring myself to do. My SAT is close to yours. My GPA not even close. Congrats on 3.9.

I was thinking I could get into Colgate no problem. Rethinking that.

M+CR is a bit low, but I think you should give it a shot!

Test scores are very low on both tests. Suggests its not just format of ACT over SAT. Also CR very low. AP scores are fine, but most colleges don’t look too closely at them unless there are tons of 4/5 grade.

You say you have a 3.9 at a difficult HS but classes look weak. Alg 2 in jr year – my guess is half the class accepted is taking Calc and most rest pre calc unless they have exceptional CR and writing skills to balance.

While you have lots of interesting ECs they dont necessarily show any focus in a particular area.

I think you need to increase difficulty of courses this year and retake ACT or SAT to make spending app fee worthwhile.
