What Are My Chances at Elon?

Hey guys, congrats to all of you that were accepted for next year! Do you think you could take some time and give me your honest opinion about my chances at Elon? It seems like such a great school. I plan to major in Education/Psychology and so if you dont think Elon would suit me well could you suggest other schools with a good reputation in these departments? I will also be applying to JMU and Longwood in 2010 (Im a Junior, should have mentioned that earlier).

Out Of State: Virgina

Please note: Fairfax County uses a 6 point grading scale (94-100 = A, 90-94 = B+ and so on).

My Current Cumulative GPA: 3.2 ... upward trend (School system does not weight Honors and only +0.5 for AP courses)
Projected SAT: 1900 based on PSAT score... Im scheduled for the actual SAT this June.

ECs:

Overall I take about 4 hours a week to give back to the community.

This upcoming summer I plan on either attending an NSLC program that I was invited to or an LPI study abroad program in Spain.

My Current Coursework:

I say you’re in. If your SAT score improves - and I’m guessing it will - to at least 1940, you’ll be eligible for some great scholarships and programs, as well. Good luck! Elon seems like a really great school. I visited a month ago and I was very impressed.

Elon has gotten VERY competitive. My D (who is a legacy) had the scores, academics and extracurriculars to get it so we thought. She was waitlisted! It depends what the admission counselors are looking for at any given point. After all, they can’t accept all qualified candidates. I think if you are male, your chances maybe greater and even that’s not a given. Good luck!!!

Yea NEMOM, my D was waitlisted too, her SAT almost 2200, GPA 3.8 from small private school, and tons of AP. We were very surprised, but it looks like a great place.

Thanks so much for your input guys!

bigbarney…

It’s a very good school. My S is graduating in May. As parents, we were satisfied with the education received for the affordable tuition. Everytime I think of it, I cringe at the cost of other private school tuitions. This year, in particular, I heard it was really tough for girls. I sure hope she gets off the waitlist, but we’re not too optimistic.

^^did Elon take a large # of students ED this year? Surprised with above waitlists…

Congrats on the graduation NEMOM, my D loved it there, don’t know when/if clear wait list timetable is or criteria, and now challenged by decision timeframes and packages from admitted schools.

Yes Elon did take a huge number of ED and EA this year, and those numbers would have been a shoe-in a few years ago, but Elon has gotten massively more competitive.

Thanks Big Barney! He’s one of the lucky ones leaving as he had a job in hand after graduation. We got our money’s worth!

Rex212 - My D knows some who applied EA only to get deferred and then waitlisted! Again, a kid with great credentials. Go figure. Oh, and they were a legacy too.

I’m sure the affordable tuition in this economy has a lot to do with it’s increase in popularity. Plus, it’s a good school to boot!

My daughter has a 4.35 weighted GPA, is ranked 6th in her class, has taken 6 AP classes and many other advanced classes. She got a 1280 on the SAT and a 690 on the writing section. She is also has a long list of EC activities as well as a job, and community service. Much to our surprise she was waitlisted at Elon. We thought she was a great candidate for Fellowes, and she was waitlisted.

Is there preferential treatment to North Carolina residents? We are from Loudoun County in Northern Virginia. Here’s hoping the VA state schools work out for her.

It’s my understanding it wasn’t a good year for girls this year…extremely competitive as they’re trying to balance the female/male ratio.

Yah my counselor said that it was a tough years for girls and that I would have a much easier chance of getting in because of them trying to balance the ratio for guys to girls. I’m also going to guess that they took a good amount of girls ED so that they wouldn’t have to worry about a weird amount of acceptances for girls during RD.

Well since being waitlisted at Elon, she has been accepted by JMU and UVA…so I think she is going to pass on the waitlist. So, perhaps they were right to waitlist her to give the spot to someone who would be more likely to use it. Congrats to those that got in, college is a great time of personal growth no matter where you do it. You get out of it what you put into it.
