Worked in state senator campaign (he won!!)

I’m looking to get a recommendation from the State Senator whose campaign I worked on, and one from my Arabic teacher. My GPA is considerably lower, but has steadily increased since the beginning of my sophomore year. I want to study International Relations and Affairs, and Georgetown’s SFS really seems to be the best place to do that. Should I apply? What should I work on to strengthen my application?

Your GPA seems very low for Georgetown, but since the process is holistic, it wouldn’t hurt you to apply. I don’t see SAT IIs, and Georgetown strongly recommends three.
I see decent ECs, most impressive are the languages, refugee project and the senate campaign, so I think you have a shot and should apply. Tell compelling stories in your essays.

As a current student at Georgetown SFS (although I am thinking of transferring out right now!), I can tell you that your expertise in a wide range of languages will help you big league. Your work with refugees and external International organizations will help you a lot too. Your GPA is a bit on the low side, although your SAT scores are fantastic. You have a pretty solid chance I would say!

You’re at SFS? Lucky!! (I have a ton of questions though)How was the application process? And how much does the interview come into play, in regards to applying? I wish there was some secret formula to getting in, because the SFS has everything that I want to study. My biggest question is what did you do to get in?

I’m in going to be taking both the World History, and the U.S. History SAT II’s in the end of August. While my GPA is pretty low, it has been a steady upward growth. IB classes have a heavier weight in terms of GPA, so hypothetically, it should improve for sure. Do you have any advice for how I can stand out with my essay? Thank you!!!

The application process is very unorthodox because as you may know by now, Georgetown does not use the Common App. I would say that my volunteering projects and internships at various embassies was a huge factor in getting me in. According to my dean, the interview is one of those things that will play a factor in getting you in if you are on the edge. Your interest in History helps, and while your GPA is a bit on the low side, a steady improvement might make the admissions people consider otherwise. Play up to your strengths and I am sure you will go great!

Thank you so much!! At this point I think I just need to work with what I have, and okay up my strengths. Good luck with the rest of your time @ Gtown!

You’ll want to take one more SAT II.
If you’re really interested in Georgetown, apply EA.
