Your grades are low compared to the rest of your school? 3.8 is your UW GPA right? Do you know your class rank? Your stats and ECs seem pretty solid but being a Chinese Male will nullify that a little bit (I’m a Chinese male too). You have a shot at getting in (their ED 2 vs. RD acceptance rates aren’t wildly different). I’d say it’s a match/low reach depending on your class rank and UW GPA.
@Musktard Its weighted. Unweighted I’d calculate to be about 3.4. The school doesn’t send the grade on a 5 scale though. Class is not ranked, the size is only about 298 and its a pretty competitive HS. I’m also wondering though, if I’m rejected by Stern would they offer me a chance at any of the other schools that I put down as secondary?
And I heard that ED II for Stern was like 15-20% while RD was around 13%?
Getting into NYU with a 3.4 would already be difficult enough. Getting into NYU Stern with a 3.4 as a male asian seems very unlikely. I would go through the ED 1 threads and the Class of 2017 acceptances for Stern. Unfortunately, being a male asian only hurts your chances thanks to affirmative action. If I were you, I’d seriously consider spending that ED2 spot on somewhere more realistic. I think Stern is a high reach for you. Yes, the ED 2 acceptance rate is marginally higher than RD but it wouldn’t be enough to warrant you using that spot IMO. I have not seen any cases where a Stern applicant is admitted to CAS or something like that but I wouldn’t say it’s not a possibility. However, I highly suggest you stick with a major you are actually interested in as transferring from a different NYU school to Stern is extremely difficult.
Good luck.
@Musktard FYI the average accepted GPA for my school for NYU is a 98/4.0 W, or a 3.6 UW.
Here’s the scattergraph for NYU for my school, decide for yourself

You’re a male asian (google affirmative action) applying to the most competitive school within NYU with a GPA that’s already well below your school’s average for the general school. If your heart is set on applying ED 2 to NYU Stern then you should but I really hope you make sure your expectations are realistic.
@Musktard 2 points below the average is not that bad, considering I would be well above the average if not for some early grades. And I’m well aware of affirmative action and race admissions in college.
That’s a 6% difference. I don’t know what you expected to see here. If you just wanted people to pat you on the back and tell you that you’re a sure thing, you really shouldn’t have posted. No one knows for sure whether or not you’ll be admitted but the admissions office at NYU Stern. IN MY OPINION, I think it will be a reach for you. I’m a male asian with a 3.98 UW and a 2360 SAT and I only considered NYU Stern a match for me. Looking at the averages for your school’s admission into NYU (again, you’re 6% below the average) is not helpful given your circumstances. You are applying as a male asian to NYU’s most selective program. That number that you’re already below is way higher than 3.6. See if your college counselor will give you a graph for male asians that were accepted into Stern from your school.
All of this does not even consider the fact that colleges tend to be more selective each year.
At the end of the day, you should do whatever you think is best. You posted in this forum and asked for opinions. I offered my opinion with a reasonable amount of written support. If you’re going to get upset, then maybe you shouldn’t have posted in the first place.
@Musktard No one’s getting upset here, I’m just looking for the best and most well-informed information possible.
If I apply to Stern and put down LSP as my other choice, is it possible for me to be admitted there?
I think you have a good chance, but it could really go either way at Stern. At any other college, you would be a very strong candidate, but I’m not too sure for Stern
I say 50-50
