I am currently a junior at a very selective highschool in NJ. I have a very good SAT score of 1960 which was my first try. I also plan on taking Math 1 and Physics SAT2 and scoring well.

However, my grades are very poor because I worked to pay for college all 3 of my highschool years. Sometimes full time during the school year. My GPA is only around a 75 unweighted.

What are my chances at admission to Stevens? It is my dream school. I plan to interview and apply early decision.

Here are my EC's:
Eagle scout
Rugby captain
Engineering club president
2 time nj business competition winner
President NJCL
technology student association gold rank
Webmaster key club
7 college credits in math and astrophysics
Work experience: 4.5 years Chinese restaurant, 6 months bed bath beyond, 8 months waiter, own and manage my own liquidation business competition.
Leader one of the biggest senior projects my school has ever completed.

Not good because your GPA is just too low even for a competitive high school. You may even have trouble with NJIT. Your EC, high school reputation and SAT score will not be enough to make up your GPA.

Find out who the Steven’s admissions person is for your area and have a talk with them. Go in person and sit with them alone. They will be very honest… and more direct than they could be on the phone or in front of your parents.

You need to remember it’s not just about grades (although a large part of it is). You want to create an excuse for them to want you.

If you just lob your statistics over the wall to them when the time comes, I think you might be in for disappointment. But if you reach out and create a relationship, sell yourself as Stevens material, you may get want you want.

Make sure you take your school work very seriously from now on.
