What are my chances at the following?

Hi guys,

I am a junior with a GPA of about a 3.0 (Its a bit higher). I know the gpa isn't very good. However on my SAT I scored a 1900 (out of 2400) which is considered decent.

My out of school activities include:

Cross Country (3 years)

Spring Track (2 years)

Wrestling (1 year)

Ski Club (2 years)

Debate Team (I qualified as a state finalist and an alternative for national finals)

I am a peer counselor (do things such as speak to kids on bullying, I do compliance checks at stores, etc.)

Worked at a video store, a Hannaford

I may POSSIBLY start taking a unique martial art and working at panera and doing red cross club as well

Everyone tells me my extra-curricular things are good and my SAT is good. I'm a good writer so I can write a nice admissions essay as well (I hope!). My GPA is the big problem.

Do I stand a chance at Northeastern University, Boston University, or American University?

If I go to Northeastern I plan on majoring in Criminal Justice. If I go to BU I plan on International Relations. American could go either way as far as majors.

Do I stand a chance at any of those 3 schools? Thanks.

Oh yeah, and Freshamn year I had 2 honors courses. Softmore I had 1 honors. Junior I had 1 honors and 1 AP. Senior I plan on having 1 AP and 2 honors (and straight A's!).

Should I take ACT as well?

There's no reason not to take the ACT. Maybe a random fluke will cause you to have a better ACT than SAT, they're slightly different tests after all. WHat kind of high school do you go to? Do a lot of kids go to top colleges? BU and American seem a little tough for you, Northeastern might be a touch easier. What state do you live in? Do you add to campus diversity in any regard?

Hi,

I go to a public high school, but a really good one. I live in Massachusetts. A lot of students in my school do well (and some don't).

I don't really add diversity in any way. I'm white (Irish, Italian), I'm a male, I was raised Catholic, and I'm straight.

As you have already pointed out, your ECs are good and your SAT scores are acceptable to good for these schools. Your problem is your GPA.

You need to get the GPA up to about at 3.2 to 3.3 UW for the schools you listed. To do this, do not take a part-time job or sign up for anymore volunteer work or clubs. Instead concentrate on your studies and make sure your GPA this semester is in the 3.8 to 4.0 range. This is where the current weakness lies with your college application as it now stands.

Good luck.

I'm going to really try and bring up that GPA. I won't do any more outside of school things and I'll focus on studying. If I can't bring it up though is it still possible to get in with a 3.1ish GPA?

Northwester: Moderate REach

I think if those grades come from a reasonably tough school Northeastern could totally happen, American and BU would be a little tougher.
