What are my chances at these schools? (Don't want to list all in title)

I'm applying to:
Brown, Columbia, U Penn (annenberg school of journalism), Northwestern, Boston College, University of Chicago, Northeastern, Boston University, and Loyola Chicago, plus some safeties I won't bother to put because they're safety.

Female, senior in HS

I plan to study JOURNALISM in college.

I did poorly freshman year... 3.2 GPA (unweighted) I believe. However, I did really well sophomore year, not very well junior year (3.3 unweighted), and right now I have about a 3.9 so far senior year (all A's except a B in AP World). I've taken 3 APs, Honors English every year, and all either high or college prep level classes. My GPA overall at the end of junior year was a 3.4, unweighted.

TESTS:
SATs... I scored a 2250 overall, with perfect 800s in CR and Writing, and a 650 in math. I got a 700 on literature and a 730 on US history.

I also recieved a perfect score on the NECAP (New England Common Assessment) in Critical Reading.

I got a 5 on the US History AP exam.

My main "hook" (is that what this is called?) is my writing.
-I've won several international and national writing contests/awards, and have attended international conferences where I have won on-site writing competitions as well
-I was selected as a reporter for Seventeen Magazine from 2007-2008.
- Highest verbal SAT score in the state through the Johns Hopkins Talent Search program in 2005
-I am a reporter for my local newspaper, and have had several large articles published. (It's a well-read newspaper, and I'm the only student who works there; everyone else is professionals.)
- I am also the editor of my school's newspaper
- I write prose poetry and contribute to the literary arts magazine at my school
- Right now I am working on a project to instill a sense of journalism in the younger generation and delivering seminars at local schools.

Another hook of mine is golf. I'm the only female on my school's state championship golf team, and only took up the sport my sophomore year. I have a 5.5 handicap now and was all-state and participated in regionals. I've lettered in both seasons I've participated and will again this year. I'm hoping to come in either first, second, or third at the girls state championship and qualify for boys states. I'm being recruited, but not by these top colleges I've listed.

ECs:
- Community Service (school club, youth group, individual service... assistant-coaching CYO basketball, volunteering at soup kitchens, volunteering at various youth events, etc)
- Editor of school newspaper
- Contributor to literary arts magazine
- Varsity tennis
- Boys Varsity golf
- Reporter for local newspaper
- contributor for Seventeen Magazine

So, I know my GPA is definitely low. However, it's unweighted, so I'm assuming it will go up to a 3.6+ once it's weighted by admissions if they do that, and I was wondering if my high English-based SAT scores (two 800s in those categories), coupled with my writing success and acclaim would catch their attention. Also, I'm obviously going to write a standout essay.

Please let me know; I'll return the favor by looking at your chances at your schools.

Also:

 • Play Piano (since 2nd grade), Clarinet (taught myself, since 6th grade), Saxophone (since 5th grade), and Guitar (since 6th grade)
 • Official babysitter for my town’s elementary school PTO meetings since 8th grade
 • Youth group member at my church
 • Poetry published in anthology and newspaper
 • Word Masters Challenge Gold Champion/ Perfect score (was recognized in press release)

PLEASE HELP ME :)

bumpppp… any takers?

bump, can somebody please help? ill return the favor.

U Penn does not have a journalism school for undergrads.

oh okay… my journalism advisor suggested it, but i guess he made a mistake.
that wasn’t really the point of this post though

I’d say you’ve got a shot at both Bostons and Loyola, the others are a stretch, mainly because of your GPA. But you never know, you’ve proven that you’re an excellent writer so you probably still hav a shot at all of the top notch schools

You sound like you’re in for a few Ivy’s at least. I knew a girl who had ECs like you, (just replace tennis with drama) and she’s in harvard now. Good luck!

PS with all that you do outide of school, I wouldn’t worry about your GPA. It sounds like it has been improving, and colleges like to see that.

I would say you have a definite hook with all the writing accomplishments.

Brown - low to mid reach
Columbia - low to mid reach

Northwestern - match
Boston College - match
University of Chicago - low reach
Northeastern - in
Boston University - in
Loyola Chicago - in

wow, very impressive!
yeah, you should be fine.
Northwestern, BU, and BC should be a fine fit.
Places such as Brown, CU, and Penn are always a toss up, but I’d say you have a pretty good chance.
good luck!

Thanks everyone who posted! Your advice was definitely helpful and I feel a little better about where I stand. I chanced everyone back who put links in their post; I’ll look for everyone else’s threads tomorrow when I’m a little more awake, haha.
