I applied Early Action to Georgia Tech’s Chemical Engineering class of 2022.
I’m an out-of-state Asian American male, & my GPA is at least 3.8+ (weighted), 3.7+ (unweighted) / 4.0.
ACT with writing: 33 & 34 if super-scored. (34 English / 35 Math / 31 Reading / 34 Science).
I’m waiting for SAT Subject scores in Chem and Math II, and I’m expecting them to be in a low-mid 700s range.
Took 7 APs (7 offered at my school): US History, Psychology, Human Geography, US Gov, English Literature & Comp, Chemistry, Calculus AB)
Extra curricular activities are mostly taking leadership in volunteer work for a local non-profit, STEM competitions, a entrepreneurship business competition, part time job & an internship, Varsity sport for 1 year (won’t be an athlete at Tech though).
Two supplemental essays are pretty well done (in my opinion), but the CommonApp essay is so-so. Letter of recommendation will be decent.
What are my chances in getting admitted to Georgia Tech?
Low. Your GPA is going to hurt you since, according to its Common Data Set, Georgia Tech emphasizes GPA over standardized test scores. Further, the acceptance rate for OOS applicants was 18% last year: http://admission.gatech.edu/content/freshman-admission.
Its important to remember that gpa is considered in context. For example on the georgia tech irp, the average admitted gpa overall is 3.97 uw but 3.78 in Massachusetts, showing that tech recognizes the grade deflation there. Depending on where u are from, that gpa may be fine.
OP: Each school has its own data set that it is required to keep, and it is usually compiled by the university’s institutional research group (or whatever it’s called at each particular school). Many colleges/universities publish this information as the “common data set.” Go to a school’s home page, and search for the phrase “common data set”; the relevant information on admissions statistics should be found in the subsections of Part C. Here it is for Georgia Tech: https://www.irp.gatech.edu/common-data-set
I think this is what you were asking about; sorry if I have misunderstood.
@lionking973 Thanks for the snapshot link. Son will be encouraged during the ‘waiting period’.
Does the Rigor # = # AP classes?. It makes sense that where schools are rated by AP performance, students are highly qualified (get 4s and 5s) and take less AP courses.
Scanning through some eastern states, it seems as if the acceptance rate is around 1/3 of applicants. I assume the quoted 18% includes a low acceptance rate for international students.
The state-state data on the snapshot link above is 5yr total data. The total number of #applications/year has gone up over 2X over that period but the # of accepted students has gone up by a much smaller number So it’s very likely that the acceptance rate and average GPA shown in that graph are optimistic with respect to this year’s applicants. I would definitely expect that the 5yr data is optimistic on acceptance rate. It’s also likely that the GPA and test scores will likely be at least a little bit higher than the historical data.
Wow! Thanks for that link. Our state has about a 38% acceptance rate, which is more encouraging than the 18! And my S has stats above the ones listed for the state, so that’s also encouraging!
Not wanting to rain on the parade but you have to note that almost every state has a 30+% acceptance rate based upon the 5yr stats from that link. And I’d bet almost every state is showing lower average GPA and test scores than the overall OOS data for last year.
Why the discrepancy?.. Because there were 2.25X as many applicants last year as 5 years ago but the overall # of acceptances is relatively flat. 2012 there were only 14K applications vs 30.5K last year. I think I saw somewhere they got 17.7K EA applications so more EA than the entire pool in 2012… Total number of acceptances are nearly the same across the entire 5 year period.
I believe the by-state data tabulated on the link is grossly optimistic since it’s lumping 5 years together which includes years 2012-14 when the overall accept rate was >40%. They aren’t publishing that fine-grain state-state data for a specific year likely because of privacy concerns.
