how are my chances at these schools? i'm afraid not being a national merit scholar will hurt me. and any other similar school recommendations?

Ok well you are competitive in terms of academics, but there is no real passion in your ECs. I would say that you have a shot, but your ECs might bring you down. But you never know, you may get accepted if you write stellar essays and get excellent recommendations. Good luck!

school club is for students that have diabetes, which i was also diagnosed with a few years back, and i also do community service with many diabetes organizations and my local university’s diabetes education branch. do you think that is the right type of passion? if not, any recommendations?

Yes that is most certainly a passion. Just keep volunteering at diabetes organizations, and that will definitely help you. What helps you even more is that you are a diabetes patient. You could write an essay about your diabetes condition and how it inspired you to fight against it. Have you considered researching at a lab? That would significantly boost your chances as well.

Just contact a Univeristy that has a research lab. A lot of schools do. It doesn’t even have to be a prestigious Univeristy, even your state school or whatever Univeristy that is closest to you will work. Just give them a call, and ask if you could do some research at a lab. I actually have connections in the Univeristy that I’m researching in through my mom, so it’s a lot easier for me. But yeah just give them a call and say that you’re interested
