Well, I have already sent in my early decision application for Virginia Tech, but I don't know what my chances are of being accepted... if anyone has an opinion to post, it will be greatly appreciated. I attend a private high school of about 200 people (9th-12th grade), and currently have a gps of 3.85. I am ranked in the upper 30% of my class and the most important classes I have taken are: Physics(ended up with a B) , AP U.S. history(ended with A), AP literature(ended with A), Pre calc(ended with B), and this year I have a high B in A.P. Calculus, and an A in chemistry. This year I am taking:chemistry, ap.calc., psychology, economics, and british literature. Altogether, in all of high school I only got 4 B's out of 21 classes( from 9th, 10th, and 11th grade).

My SATs were rather low which is why I am worried. I am interested in the engineering school at va. tech, but I only received 520-reading, 540-writing, 620-math.

As for extracurricular, I have plenty of community volunteer service hours, played sports(inside and outside of school), attend a robotics team outside of school, been in the schools honors choir, and made all state and all shore chorus 5 yrs in a row. My leadership positions include: freshmen class president, tenor section leader 5 years in a row, and school praise band leader(since we have a chapel service on Tuesdays).

Again , any opinions would be great :) thanks!

Your SAT scores are right around the 25th percentile for accepted students in 2010. But that is for the entire college, not the engineering school which may be different. Does your school offer many AP courses? How many have you taken? Your grades do look strong enough but I agree with you about the SAT scores. Did you take them more than once?

Have you visited and spoken to an admission counselor? I think you have a shot but it would be helpful to know what the stats on admission are for engineering students.

From what I’m reading on all the other boards, VT Engineering is looking for a 700 math at a minimum. Tech doesn’t use the writing portion. Math, Verbal/Reading scores, GPA, rigor of cirriculum and class rank are the main drivers. EC’s are nice but VT Engineering looks mainly at objective criteria. You should also look at the 75th percentile stats for VT as I would assume you would have to be at or above those percentiles to get an ED for a selective program like engineering. I also understand that many of the ED engineering candidates, though qualified, are deferred and accepted under regular admission later.

You may want to go to parchment.com and input your academic statistics as they have a pretty robust data base of admitted and currently attending students. The site will provide you with a percentage chance plus a scattergram of how you stack up against other applicants and current students. It also asks the question whether you will be applying ED and for selective major.

Well do u think it would be better for me to do university studies for a semester and transfer to engineering, because I doubt I scored more than a 700 on the sat I just took in the beginning of november…

On the Engineering tour at VT in April, they said they are looking for a SAT in math over 600. Son is applying ED to Engineering as well – good luck!

Oh 600? Alright, cool im still on the lower end of that but I guess we will see what happens in a month. Thanks for the info and wish ur son good luck too.

Just an update, i dont know how much it will help, but i took the SAT again and recieved twenty points more than last time. math- 630 and reading- 530. Another thing, just out of curiosity, wouldn’t I have a better chance since I applied ED? Since it is binding wouldn’t it mean more to them that I am serious about the school?
