What are my chances for ENG: CE and/or CS?

Hello,

I had JUST finished typing this whole thing up once before and when I clicked submit I was prompted to log-in and lost all my work! :( Oh well.

Anyways, I would highly appreciate it if I could get some assistance on figuring out my chanse to get in to UIUC's College of Engineering for Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

I'll list all pertinent information and then I will ask my main questions:

30 on ACT (Retaking in September and shooting for at least a 32)
3.92 Weighted GPA
69 of 529 Class Rank
Will have taken 10 Honors courses and 5 AP courses at the end of my Senior (this) year.
I have taken almost all, if not all, of the honor courses avaliable at my high school.

Activites/Clubs/Jobs/Sports during HS:

1 Year of Gymnastics
2 Years of Football (QB)
2 Years of Recycling Club (I am also the Webmaster for it)
1 Year of Robotics Team
1 Year of Programming Club (I may be 1 of the founders of if it is approved at my school)
4 Years of Marching Band (I am Webmaster, Section Leader, and Historian this year)
4 Years of Wind Ensemble
4 Years of Jazz Ensemble
4 Years of Pep Band
1 Year of Jazz Combo

1 Year of National Honors Society (pending)

I recently started offering private saxophone lessons to middle school students.
I also have recently been employed as the delivery boy for a local pizzaria.

There are other various volunteer things I have probably done during my highschool career, but these are the main ones I can think of now that I would put on my application.

Now for my questions:

As said previously...What are my chances of getting into ENG: CS and/or CE?

Would a double major for those two majors be useful or viable? How would I go about applying for a double major at UIUC? And also how difficult would it potentially be?

What would be a good back-up school - just in case? ISU?

Thank you for your time. And again, I highly appreciate it!

This year’s freshman middle 50% range for engineering: 30-34 ACT and top 10%-2% class rank. You are not in it for rank and just barely for ACT and both CS and CE usually have a little higher middle 50% ranges than the engineering college as a whole. You should assume it is a reach but worth the try as having 10 honors and 5 APs will be a plus.

You can be admitted as a freshman only to one major. Second major is something you get admitted to after being there for two years. It is not easy to do two majors particularly in engineering because the total number of semester hours needed to graduate for one engineering major are daunting (more than any other majors on campus) and take many students more than 4 years to complete and adding a second major will likely add another year on top of that if you are accepted into second major (and there are no guarantees you will).

Good back up depends a lot on what you are looking for and where and cost ranges. In illinois, UIC, ISU, IIT, Bradley, and even SIU and NIU are possibilities. However, if you want to go across a state line Purdue in Indiana is top notch and Rose-Hulman is also premier. UWisconsin is also good.

Your grades and tests are also good for a lot of colleges in many states and you should start doing research into many engineering colleges if you are considering outside of Illinois.

Thanks for your input Drusba.

If my ACT score were to shoot up the (at least) 2 points that I hope they will this coming ACT score, would that greatly increase my chances?

Also, for rank, does it help at all since my class size is relatively large and I am at ~13%? I know it will definitely go up at the end of my senior year since a lot of my AP classes are during my second semester, but unfortunately that won’t show up on my transcript now.

Also I have heard talk about applying into the LAS: CS major and then transferring over to ENG: CS. Is that easy to accomplish? And how would one do so?

Thanks again!

An ACT increase to 32 will definitely help your chances, but your senior year class rank will come too late to be considered in the application process. Even if you don’t get directly in the program of choice, your scores give you an excellent chance of getting an offer to DGS, where you can take the same math and science courses as those admitted directly to engineering take, and if your GPA is high enough you can transfer into Engineering.

Honestly, compared to me you have a way higher chance of getting in. I’m a sophmore in CompE. I entered with barely a 3.0 GPA, 32 ACT, and not much extra curricular activities. Like in all honestly the only reason I think I got in was because I had my IB diploma my junior year and had taken like 16+ AP classes and some College courses. But you will probably do much better than me
