What are my chances for getting into a top college?

I was not an attentive student at all during my freshman and sophomore years, so I’m currently regretting a lot of things. I got quite a few Bs and B+s mixed in with As and the majority of the APs, I’ve taken 7 so far, are 4s with only 1 5 from APES. My counselor told me that my chances for college are quite slim at the moment and unless I have a stellar year next year, All As and 5’s.

My Current Weighted: 4.6
Current Unweighted: Too terrible to mention

Extra Curriculars:
AC Youth Orchestra
Math Team
Math Team volunteering
FASCA, Vice Pres and Pres of my Chapter
National Spanish Honor Society
National Honor Society

APs:
Macro Economics: 4
Government: 4
Environmental Science: 5
World History: 4
Computer Science: 4
Biology: 4
Statics: 4

SAT: I took a test that calculated the score for the old one: 2040

Junior Year current plan:
AP US History
AP Psychology
AP Physics 1 & 2
AP English Language
AP Chemistry
AP Calculus BC

My counselor told me I needed all 5s and all As in order to get into a good college, I think I might be doomed.

I depends upon your definition of “good college”. If you want to go to Harvard, Stanford, Bowdoin, or equivalent for undergrad then yes you probably have messed up your chances quite a bit. However, there are thousands of universities and colleges in the US, some more outside the US, and hundreds of them are very good.

While you didn’t quite say it (or I missed it), I have the impression from your post that you just finished your sophomore year of high school. Do as well as you can next year, and then see where you stand. Pay attention in class, keep ahead of your reading and homework, do ALL homework early, and seek out extra help in any subjects where you need help. This should help you get into a very good university even if it is not Ivy League.

When I was in graduate school at an “elite” university, the other students there had done their undergrad at a very wide range of different universities. Applying to graduate school they won’t even ask anything about your high school – it will all be based on what you did as an undergraduate and since then (many of us had some work experience). Half way through high school, you still have pretty much anything and everything available as options at some point in the future, but you need to start to earn it. I do know people who turned things around dramatically at a significantly older age than where you are now, but the earlier you start the easier it will be.

Good luck with this.

Good enough

I agree with @DadTwoGirls , it depends on your definition of a “good colleges.” Don’t get obsessed with going to those top 30 schools, it doesn’t guarantee you a better job than anybody who simply went to any public university, or an obscure LAC. Look at the schools you want to go to, and look at their admissions stats. Find kids who graduated from your school and see where they got accepted. Harvard and Stanford are not the only schools in the world. Your stats may not be good enough for these schools, but you’re definitely not doomed. I doubt your guidance counselor actually told you that. If your guidance counselor thinks only ivy leagues and other brand name schools are the only good schools out there, tell him to watch himself. There’s no need to pressure a kid to go to Harvard. People graduate from moderately selective schools and still land high paying jobs. Even if you go to a community college after high school, your life isn’t over. Trust me, you won’t catch on fire or anything.
