Chances for top schools? (i.e. anything with an admit rate under 15%, especially if it’s under 5%)
SAT: 1550
Math - 790
Reading - 760
ACT: 34
Subject Tests:
Math 2 - 800
Chem - 700
US History - 700
GPA: On 7 point scale, 6.85. It’s not weighted for AP classes so I have gotten all A’s but due to taking band I can’t get a perfect GPA. On a normal 4 pt scale it would be 4.0 and weighted would be like 4.5
Class rank: 10/954 but does not include junior year. Will likely be higher when I get my new rank.
Might be national merit, but I’m on the borderline for Texas so Idk yet

I am an Asian female. I will not be applying for any financial aid. I am unsure about my rec letters, but I know of 2 teachers who know me so well I can’t imagine them giving me bad recs ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Please do not tell me to have safety schools thank you because I get automatic admission to Texas schools bc of my class rank so this is covered.
If you would like to know anything else let me know in the comments!
Well, universities with an acceptance rate under 5% means “Stanford”. Under 6% means “Harvard and Stanford”. For schools at this level, your stats are probably pretty close to typical for the majority of their applicants, with probably close to 80% being not very far from where you are in terms of stats. As such, your stats are typical of the students who get accepted at the very top schools, but are also typical of the majority of students who get rejected. Also, many of their accepted students have “hooks” such as being athletes or children of alumni and/or major donors.
Given that you didn’t mention football or (for Harvard) hockey, I will assume that you are not a top athlete. With that I would expect that your chances at the very top schools are no better than the percentage of applicants who get accepted. For somewhere such as Bowdoin (at 14.9% just below your 15% number) I would guess that your chances might be marginally better than the overall acceptance rate, but I think that it is still a reach for you and for everyone.
Given how strong your safeties are in Texas, and given automatic acceptance for you at a school as strong as UT Austin, I don’t see anything wrong with the rest of your applications going to reach schools such as Stanford and Harvard and MIT.
I’m just worried because I didn’t do anything huge like national olympiads or whatever they’re called and I never even made all state for band so I feel like that could make me look weaker
Just a comment on the title for this thread:
You have great stats. As long as you continue your excellent academic performance, you are in at UT Austin, which is a great school. My understanding is that Texas is on its way up economically for very good reasons (from a rather good position).
I understand that getting into the very top ranked schools is a reach for everyone, and involves what I would call a rather horrid process. However, you are doing really well and have a solid safety in the bank. Try not to let this entire process stress you out.
