What are my chances for Howard University?

I plan on earning my bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. My GPA is a 3.6 (will be 3.7 when I graduate high school). I will graduate with 12 dual enrollment college credits. I received a 550 on my rSAT reading and a 490 on the math. Throughout high school, I’ve competed in national competitions. I independently designed and built a prosthetic hand that is currently voice controlled and I placed 1st in my county for 3 consecutive years (this year will be 4) and when I advanced to nationals, I placed 3rd in the U.S twice (9th grade year and 11th grade year) for my project. This year I am continuing the prosthetic hand project and it will be wearable as well as have 15 additional voice commands. I plan on delivery via mail a personal essay, photos of my project, printed news papers about me and the project and I will include a paper with a link to my video interviews where a live demonstration can be shown. If I do this, do you think I will be accepted? I am apart of many organizations as well as president of the girls engineering club as my school.
Comments: Black, Female, Qualified for financial aid,

Yes, I think Howard will LOVE you!

Thank you so much. I am so stressed out right now and all I have been doing is working on the next improvement of my long term prosthetic hand project, studying and preparing for the future. Your comment definitely relieved some of my stress. Thank you

@Slatortue Oh my gosh, I think your project is dope! Did you get any acceptance email/packet yet?

I might be HU '21 but it depends on this financial aid they give me

@jolealea Hey! Thank you so much, I really appreciate that. I applied on March 3rd (using the common app) and I am planning to mail out an engineering portfolio on Monday. I have not received a response yet so I am really nervous as I wait haha. Howard is where I need to be. If I am going to be a future owner of a Black owned business/company that manufactures in prosthetics, orthopedic and surgical supplies, Howard is where I need to be so that I can be around brilliant, passionate, and motivated people who look like me and are likeminded. I want to create relationships for future networking so that together we will be able to put money back into, as well as build the Black community.

Congratulations on your acceptance!! And yes, D.C is an expensive area so that’s completely understandable. The struggle is real! Especially when it comes time to pay for tuition and fees (I believe for HU it’s about 38,000/yr). Hopefully you decide to go. I have yet to step foot in the school, as I am a few states down, but I have absolutely NO DOUBT when I say, the opportunities and experiences you will receive from an HBCU are not replicable. I love hearing the different stories about what people have sacrificed for the graduation cap and gown of their HBCU and how it was all worth it. Of course you will miss your loved ones, unless you already live in the MD, DC, or VA areas but… I’m telling you, there is nothing like an HBCU. Good luck with everything!

@Slatortue No problem, I think that’s really cool! Good luck on your application!
I hope you get your decision soon! Howard is notorious for being sort of slow (I applied in late December and I got my email decision last week. I have yet to receive my admission packet in the mail and a bunch of people haven’t either), but I think you sending your portfolio out will help speed the process. From my knowledge of admission counselors, a lot of them base the majority of their decisions on either SAT/ACT scores or those they feel will be successful after graduating. Successful alumni = more recognition and funds. I definitely think they’ll consider you as someone who is very likely to be successful after graduating!

I applied for Biology, but I have mixed feelings between majoring pre-med/bio to become a physician and majoring in nursing to become a nurse practitioner.

I know, I understand right where you’re coming from with the HBCU experience, especially Howard! I come from a city/high school where not many minorities are motivated so it would be an awesome change of scenery to be surrounded by all of these students who are motivated and love what they’re learning to do. My mom is just dreaming of saying that her daughter goes to Howard and wearing that Howard sweatshirt smh haha.

I agree, Howard is one of the most expensive schools that I’ve narrowed down on my list. Based on last year’s SAT/GPA requirements I would’ve had tuition and fees paid (or tuition/fees and room, can’t remember which), but Howard decided to change what I would’ve qualified for to be partially need-based very annoyed lol. We need all the coins we can get, haha.

Thanks so much! Good luck to you too!

I wanted to know if we could use the aid provided in the Capstone Scholarship in our own ways. For example, living in double regular dorms and taking cheap meal plans?
