I’m a rising senior and will be applying to UPenn for the M&T program (backup Wharton), but I haven’t decided on ED or RD yet. I have visited the school and have loved it.

How do I look for ED, and will they be different from my chances for RD?
Great stats, definitely a good chance. Yes, RD chances definitely decrease for everyone, and especially for M&T which is insanely hard to get into to begin with. I say if Penn M&T is your first choice then go for it. If you get rejected from M&T but accepted to Wharton, then the ED contract is no longer binding and you ca choose to go somewhere else if you want to.
When you apply ED to M&T, you have the option to ED to Wharton as well. If you chose ED to both and were rejected by M&T, accepted by Wharton, your ED contract would be still binding. If you were deferred, The ED contract would be nullified.
^ true what @f2000sa is saying sorry didn’t clarify that.U still have the option not to ED to Wharton, in which case Wharton is not binding if you do not get into M&T but only Wharton. So if M&T is your top choice but there some other place you would prefer above the wharton-only option, applying ED to Penn still makes sense. Of course if M&T is your first choice and Wharton the very next, designating Wharton as ED too makes sense.
@f2000sa any idea if both of following alternative scenarios are possible:
deferred to RD, considered again for M&T during RD, if rejected, then considered for Wharton RD.
rejected from M&T during ED, deferred to RD and considered only for Wharton RD.
I read somewhere on here that if deferred it will only be case 1, not case 2 but not sure
If you chose ED to both, and were deferred by M&T, you would not be considered as ED to Wharton. You would be reconsidered during RD round both for M&T and Wharton. If you were rejected by M&T during ED round, you would be considered ED to Wharton. If you were deferred by Wharton, you would be re-considered only for Wharton during RD round.
@basketballstar24 I think if you apply to M&T RD and are waitlisted -then you most likely would have been offered acceptance into Wharton (if that is your choice)… in other words you wouldn’t be waitlisted for both M&T and Wharton. You would be denied/waitlisted M&T and accepted into Wharton or denied M&T and denied Wharton.
also I have heard if you are deferred from ED then you will not be waitlisted during RD -instead you will either be accepted or denied during RD.
