What are my chances for these schools? (High SATs and incredibly low GPA)

Hey everyone,

Here's a brief summary of all my stats so far. I am a Junior, and I know that my GPA is liable to change, especially if my senior grades will be factored in when I apply regular to a few schools. I know my GPA is extremely, extremely low compared to what most people are supposed to have when they apply, but do I still have a chance? Does it help that my school was ranked 16/322 statewide in 2010? Do colleges take that into consideration when considering students for admission?

Projected Unweighted GPA (after Junior Year): 3.67/4
Projected Weighted GPA (after Junior Year): 4.38/5
SATs: 2310/2400; Reading: 770, Math: 750, Writing: 790 (only took once in October)

Planning on taking ACTs later & PSATs were top 98%

Leadership Positions:
-Vice President of Class freshman year
-Secretary for two years in Leo Club (international volunteering organization); expecting definitely VP or President spot into senior year
-Editor of school newspaper for three years (counting my position for next year)
-News editor sophomore year
-Opinion editor junior year
-Managing Editor (1/3)
-hopefully a officer position in our school's MUN club, which is currently 1st out of all public schools in the NATION (elections are in a few weeks! wish me luck!!)

Extra-Curriculars:
-interned at the District Office of my State's congressman
-will be interning over the summer at the Supreme Court in Taiwan; job will be corresponding with American government over Taiwanese policy on things like human rights, etc. (very excited for this one! will this help my application?)
-won Best Delegate at two MUN conferences this year: Cornell Model United Nations Conference & North American Invitational Model United Nations Conference (hosted at Georgetown, but was considered international competition)
-received Honorable Delegate this year at Princeton University Model United Nations
-also attended Rutgers University MUN Conference & Washington Area MUN Conference sophomore and freshman year respectively, but didn't get any awards (should I even include this in my application?)
-1st place in my state for scenario writing competition freshman year; was sent to internationals and placed third individually
-2nd place in scenario writing sophomore year; district didn't have enough money to send us to internationals that year :/
-2nd place in the state for Future Problem Solving program in the state sophomore year, but not enough to go to Internationals (another team from same school placed first)
-2nd place in the state for Future Problem Solving program THIS YEAR; will be going to International Competition in Wisconsin in few months to compete (only other team representing our state at internationals; only team in our district to qualify for ICs)
-top 6th pianist in my state for a competition (invited 550 high schools to participate and only chose six pianists); criteria was that players had to be in high school
-semi-finals at tri-state competition where only 10 pianists were selected in my age group out of a total of 100-200 that tried out
-several hundred volunteering hours
-played in Carnegie Hall twice for piano
-invited to DiCapo Opera Theatre to perform for piano but couldn't because of scheduling conflicts
-only student selected to represent my district at the United Nations this year/ act as a liaison for United Nations as well as Lions International
-Spring & Winter Track for freshman and sophomore year (JV); I'm not very athletic and definitely would not be able to beat out people to compete at meets so I could get my varsity letter, so I decided to not do track junior year, because I had such a heavy courseload

Academics:
- AP Courses (to junior year): Chemistry, English Language & Composition, Spanish Language & Composition, and US History

^WILL be taking AP Exams for all in a few weeks! Wish me luck!! :)

-AP Courses scheduled to take senior year: Calculus AB, American Government, English Literature & Composition, and Spanish Literature & Composition

Other than that, I take all honors. It's not that I'm a pretentious student, it's just that the environment that my school is comprised of is extremely, extremely competitive, and it's common for people to have five/six AP classes per year. The fact that I'm taking four is considered average.

So, sorry for that long post. How does everything look? I know that my weighted and unweighted are on the low side for acceptance into most ivies, but is it possible that I could still get into some based off everything else I've accomplished? I have a true passion for international relations as well as politics, and I place much more energy and vigor into my pursuits for Leo Club, MUN, and piano. I care about those much more than my schoolwork, which is a mistake I should not have made, but I can only do as much as I can to keep everything up and excel where I can.

How do my chances look for these schools? Feel free to note any others that I have not listed below if you think it's a match (sorry for that incredibly long list!):
-Brown
-Cornell
-Yale
-Princeton
-Columbia
-UPenn
-Carnegie Mellon
-UC Berkley
-Duke
-Georgetown
-NYU
-UChicago
-Syracuse
-Emory
-Wellesley
-UIllinois
-Northwestern
-WashU at Saint Louis

THANKS SO MUCH! I know that must've been massive to read, but please let me know what you guys think about my chances! It would mean so much to me.

Hope everyone has a great week!

you are crazy for even worrying! sit back, relax, and enjoy your acceptance letter to pretty much everywhere.

^ I agree…:)

I’m pretty much in the same boat as you. Similar average lots of EC’s and a ridiculously competitive school (Top 30 in the country). So I think that admission statistics from my school can apply to you. Using those I think Ivies+Duke+UCB+Georgetown are reaches.
Everything else is pretty much match.

almost exactly like me

low gpa 3.58

sat 2330

good extracurriculars

im going to nyu stern and got accepted to berkeely/ucla

the ivies will be tough to get into

thanks for all the responses so far guys!

bump!!

Your GPA is not incredibly low.

i

Projected Unweighted GPA (after Junior Year): 3.67/4
Projected Weighted GPA (after Junior Year): 4.38/5*

We’ve got the same stats in terms of GPA and SAT, and ECs are not TOO far off from each other besides the Carnegie Hall part. And I really want to hold back from yelling at you for calling a 3.67 “incredibly low”… unbelievable.

sorry guys  in my eyes, it was the best gpa that i could’ve gotten for myself given my courseload and how hard i actually worked. what i SHOULD have said was that the gpa that i will have is considered “incredibly low” from ivy league standards, which are the main schools that i will be applying to in the fall. i’m really sorry if i offended anyone by what i said!

bump

You are right; your GPA is very low compared to the average accepted students at most of those schools. However, that does not make it impossible to get into a selective school.

I’m not going to lie, your GPA will hurt you. However, if you have a strong upward trend, that will help mitigate some of the damage. I was able to gain admission to Notre Dame with a 3.65 GPA and a 2280 SAT. While it is very selective (rejected 50% of 2400SAT applicants and 70% of Val applicants), though, it is not as selective as some of those <10% admit rate schools.

After reading over everything, I think you’ve got a decent shot at some of those selective (<30% admit rate) schools. However, don’t expect to get into the <10% admit rate schools. Try very hard and if you do get in, be happy. However, don’t think you will, as it will be very difficult, and likely won’t happen.

The good news, though, is that Georgetown is the best for International Relations, and their admit rate is around 20%. You have a better shot there than at the Ivy League schools, and the program is actually better for IR, so that’s a blessing. Still, it will be difficult. Expect very mixed results. I was accepted by Notre Dame, but waitlisted by less-selective BC (generally applicants are accepted by BC and not ND, not the other way around). At the point where you have high scores, lower grades, and good activities and essays, it will just depend on what each school is looking for. Don’t despair if you don’t get into selective schools EA or if you don’t get accepted to some of the less selective on the list; college admissions is largely unpredictable.

thanks so much billy mc  i couldn’t have asked for a more thoughtful and candid response.
