I'm a student at a community college, and I want to transfer to UCLA's English department.

I have a dead-on 3.51 GPA and one more year to go, I will apply to UCLA in the fall of 2010, so I will submit an application this fall.

Does UCLA ask for an update for the classes you've done for the fall semester? Planning on taking 3 UC transferrable classes in Fall '09, and if I can get straight A's in that (one's worth 5 units), I would get roughly a 3.6 GPA. After that, probably in Spring '10 I get two more classes. I'm a member/volunteer of the Newport Beach Film Festival, I'm currently signing up for Orange County Screenwriters Association, I've been in two college societies (in Film and Environment) and I work at Disneyland and plan to volunteer in several activities over the summer.

I want to be a filmmaker, but I also want to be a better writer, so I stick with that as a good way to be a better storyteller as a whole. What are my chances to get into UCLA's English department, whether it is just English or one of its specified departments?

If not, does CSULB have a pretty good English department?

yes, it’s honors, and if you complete TAP you’ll have priority consideration over other CC students when UCLA admissions reviews your application (assuming english is part of the college of letters and science).

however, seeing as you’re transferring fall of 10, i doubt you’ll have enough time to be tap certified unless you’re willing to cram a bunch of honors classes each semester in addition if your planned workload. depending on your college, usually it takes 15 honors units to be tap certified. my college requires 24 honors units, but over 90% of TAP students coming from my college get accepted into UCLA.

They’ll make you submit your fall semester grades. You’ll submit your application in November, then they’ll tell you to submit your fall grades sometime in January. Those grades will be on your application when they review it.

Not impossible for quarter system… I finished all the honors requirements (4 full lecture, 2 seminar) in 3 quarters (found out about TAP late - beginning of last fall).
You can find out if your school has TAP through the honors department (website or counseling office)

English + TAP 3.5^ = almost guaranteed.

Also, I suggest you apply to UC Irvine just in case. Excellent English department there.

A 3.6 with TAP is not guaranteed. I just transferred to UCLA this fall from WA State as an ENGL Major and I got into College Honors and will be applying for ENGL honors. The students who got into UCLA ENGL from CA had GPAs like 3.8 or 3.9 and 4.0. In fact, I don’t know anyone from my dorm or classes, so far that is, who has anything lower than that. I think UCLA, because of the budged crisis, is attempting to accept more out of state and country students since they do pay 3X what CA students. I’m not saying I have a low GPA or anyone who transferred like me; on the contrary, I have a higher GPA that a 3.6. But you never know, they do like CA students and it is a public UNI serving the CA residents. But I would 100% apply to other schools.
On another note, if so far you have been getting a 3.0 in a community college, I would caution you about getting into UCLA ENGL. Their department is one of the best in the nation with excellent research opportunities and so forth. That said, it is EXTREMELY challenging! My friends with the 4.0s are getting Cs and Bs on their midterms and papers. The 10 series -10A, 10B and 10C- are so grueling! I’m not trying to discourage you or put you down, I’m just warning you that it’s not what you may expect. The level that the professors and the TAs expect from you regarding essay skills, reading skills, close reading, analysis, unpacking paragraphs, … Apply but be warned, your GPA might fall below the 3.6 (if you get there) before you know it.
Good luck either ways! It’s an amazing school with a lot to offer - I’m sure you’ll love it regardless of the hardships!
