Greetings! So some background,
I’m a sociology major, I have completed almost all my prereqs just finishing up math this semester, I have a 3.06 GPA which should come up to about a 3.15 by end of semester, I believe my personal statements were strong since it appealed to my English instructor as well as other peers.
I explain in my PS that I was a English tutor on campus, I also work with children with special needs, and to explain my GPA setback from 2014 I got diagnosed with cancer which pushed me to work full time in order to get health benefits which hurt my classwork. Since last spring I’ve been on remission and all looks good now, so I’ve been working to makeup for my failed classes and I got all other stuff taken care of. Do you think there’s a good chance of getting in?
Btw these are just key points of my personal statement I definitely did not try to only appeal to emotions but I used my personal strengths to show why I think I’m a decent student to get in lol
It’s pretty hard to say, I wouldn’t feel right saying anything one way or the other, but I will say that your PS does a good deal to explain the bad grades, although I’m not sure if those UCs read the personal statements as a general rule of thumb. Having a good track record in socio classes would go a long way to helping your application.
I have a 3.2 and got accepted to UCSB for math, and there have been a few lower GPA socio majors who got accepted there too so far if I remember correctly, but I’m not 100% sure on that. Best of luck with your admissions, and I’m very glad to hear you’re in remission!
