Hi! I’m a senior from Washington, DC, and Michigan is my first choice. I know they are probably releasing decisions this week, but I’m just too nervous. A little bit about me: I go to an elite (yet challenging) private school, I am a white male, I have a twin brother who is also applying to UMich, and I want to major in Data Science in the LSA. My SAT scores are pretty good (1510, with 790 on math and 720 on English), and I got a 790 on the Math II Subject test and 750 on the Physics Subject Test. My GPA is my biggest area of fear (which is why I’m so nervous); I have a 3.33 GPA, yet I have taken all of the most rigorous classes offered at my school, such as Multivariable Calculus, Advanced Chemistry, and Advanced Economics. As you could tell from my test scores and intended major, I am a math/science guy, and I did pretty well in all STEM Classes, and the humanities were the classes that killed my GPA. My school does not offer AP classes, yet I have still taken 4 AP tests: BC Calculus (4 with a 5 on the AB subscore), Physics C Mechanics (4), French Language and Culture (4), and Latin (3). For extracurriculars, I play a lot of sports, but I also do a bit of community service, I am in my school’s orchestral band (I’ve played the trumpet in the band since 6th grade), and I help work at my temple. I also took part of Model Congress for two years. For my high school, I played 2 years of varsity football (1 year as a captain), 3 years of varsity baseball (1 as a captain), and also played soccer and tennis outside of school. The last thing that I’ll add is that I am a legacy, that my dad went to Michigan, and that he donates a fairly substantial amount of money. I’m not sure how much, but I know that he helps fund a baseball scholarship for the varsity team. He also has many connections to the local representative, and to many alumni who donate even more who he asked to put in a good word for me. If you want/need any other info about me please let me know. I really hope I get in, but could someone tell me where they think I land in terms of my odds? Thanks so much, and Go Blue!

Being out of state with a low for the school GPA, I would think your chances are low. Taking the rigorous classes and doing well in them is key for Michigan.
I wouldn’t count on influence also. Lots of kids with ties to Michigan and wealth /connections. Not really sure if that matters. Legacy might help if your borderline.
One thing students don’t take into account. Coming into Michigan many high GPA /Stat kids drop like a whole letter grade their first semester /year. It’s a really tough school.
I would honestly be looking at other schools that match your profile better.
Good Luck.
