Ik my GPA and rank is not great, but I feel like my EC’s and ACT score will boost my application a bit. What do ya’ll think my chances are?

It’s worth a shot, but don’t get your hopes up. It’s just really hard to get in as an OOS or international student.

@MaineLonghorn What if I am a Texas resident? I’m from Pakistan but am born and raised in Texas.

Can’t give a chance of any sort without class rank. So you are a Texas resident? Once you get some info on your class rank, we can chance you.

UT doesn’t care about the competitiveness of your school, so if you’re not top quarter at least, I’d say your chances are near zero for McCombs.

@Jpgranier Oh I’m most definitely top quarter. I’m most likely top 15% or higher but not top 7%.

I can just tell you that my nephew had amazing ECs and strong test scores, but he didn’t get into McCombs and he was in the top 13% at his competitive high school. He also had some strong family connections to the school (my dad was a well-respected professor who had been at UT over 40 years at that point), but it didn’t make a difference. He was heartbroken.

You have a decent shot. You should apply to BHP (by the early deadline) so that you can get an early read & decision. Your scores are good but of course outside top 7% you’re a review candidate. BHP will want to see more business focused ECs - a summer job would help here. You can also write about your fundraising as a not for profit enterprise. Get great recommendations that focus on leadership and other skills related to business. Ask for the recommendations now before the school year ends.

@JAMCAFE With all due respect, I don’t think I have any chance to make BHP lol.

The salutatorian of my high school was rejected from McCombs. Is your high school very well known? I feel like students from non top 7% may have a little bit of an advantage on applying to their major. I’ve seen plenty of kids from highland park and plano west with similar stats to you getting accepted.

@Jpgranier Yes luckily we have a very active relationship with UT and are very well known to them. We are a top 50 school in Texas as well. Does that hep in admissions?

Sure, it’ll help to an extent. UT grades on a couple of algorithms that count in your GPA, specific parts of your SAT, and then meshes that score with a 1-5 of your essays, ECs, recommendations, and anything else on your resume.

It could be seen as a tie breaker for sure, especially if you somehow got waitlisted. But it won’t help much because the top 7% rule was established to not have UT full of only students from the same top high schools. They’re willing to take less qualified students in the name of diversity.

If you want to know how competitive your school is, I recommend you like how many students were qualified for National Merit Semi-Finalists (% of your class). Is your school in DFW area?

@CertifiedCC No it’s in Houston
